Coolant leaking from....
 

The bottom of the water pump just behind the pulley. I have been told that this could mean my water pump is going. Does anyone else know what could be causing this. I have just recently converted my car to evans coolant as well.

Pull the pully off to make sure. There are two holes in the taper of the water pump, one on top, one underneath. Look to see if either is the source of the leak. Mine was leaking from the lower.

It's leaking from the lower. I only had to fill the coolant a little bit. So it didn't leak that much. I think that it may have just leaked the access coolant. That could be wrong though.

Ummm.. is there such a thing as excess coolant? That is, it would just go into the overflow, and then get sucked back in on cooldown. Or did you mean overfilling and then running down the front? Anyway, if it was coming out the weep hole, that is an early indicator of failure. If you are running the evans, you probably have a longer period of time before failure (sieze up) as you have no pressure on the system, which in part causes the failure. Try turning the pump wheel by hand. Does it make any kind of squeeking sound? If so, you're on your way to failure. A healthy pump gives a little tiny squeek when you first turn it, more like a rubber against metal sound, then makes no noise as you turn in. It will usually have a slight resistance to initial turning. Bad pumps squeal while turning, have shaft end play, and are too easy to turn, until the sieze, then they don't turn at all.

Then you get to play the "did I warp the housings? Did I?" game. :)

Ah i see, Well what if i take the belt off and turn it and it makes a regular noise like a healty water pump. My car only has 46,000 miles on it, and it was working fine before I changed to evans. So Im wandering what it could be. Right now im not home and im not in my car. But when I get home I will check it too see if it squeeks.

If the noise is like a healthy pump (46K will be a little less tight than fresh, but not terribly squeeky), then I have no idea what up!!

Scrub, indeed your waterpump is failing.

Thanks Fd3Boost. A couple of questions though. one would be what caused this to happen? I haven't converted my system to 0 PSI yet but was planning on it in the next few days. Im curious as to how this happend for a few reasons. One would be so it dosen't happen again. It hasn't happened before I did the conversion, unless the coolant on the ground the one day at work was coming from there. Also how much does it cost for a new water pump? I thought the install was more involved, thats why I was so hesitant to change it. I guess if no one replys to the cost I will find out tomorrow when I go to the mazda dealershiop and find out from them. Thanks again.

u just changed my water pump gasket and my water pump housing to gaskter trust me its simple just remember what bolts went where. it would have taken me less time if i got the gaskets in. oh yea and go to mazdatrix.com for the water pump i think its alot cheaper then the dealership.

Sounds good. Its a good thing that im a regular at the parts shop at mazda.....the lady that works there made me a dealer so i get my parts cheaper. "Dans auto repair" :D It's great.

I would bet it is either the gasket between the water pump and the water pump body or the gasket between the water pump body and the engine. On my car it was the second. You have to take a lot of stuff out to get the water pump body off but it is fairly straightforward. ONly a couple of bucks for gaskets. Mine was really crapped out.

New water pump and gasket.... $73.00
I should have it installed a little later today after work.
