Considering new motor from Gotham, any advice
 

So I'm about 99.9% my motor is blown(I will find out this weekend when I compression test it), but I am expecting the worst and considering a new motor. I am looking to get a couple things done in the meantime and hopefully have my car done by summer.

I am basically looking for advice from you guys and price quotes on what I want to do. So far my car only has an AVC-R, MP, clutch, and intake. I plan on buying a street ported motor from Gotham for $3000 and whatever it costs to ship my motor there and the new motor back. I want to be able to enjoy my new motor so I'm planning on a PFC and having Steven Kan tune it. I am not planning on running too much boost, cuz I'm staying stock seq, but I will probably get an upgraded fuel pump and 1600cc secondaries for future purposes and just run a low duty cycle(any thoughts on this?). Downpipe is a must as well. I am not out for any specific HP goal, I just want my car to have a new motor and be more fun to drive than it was before so I can feel like a 3 year old who just got a new bike...again. Chicago summers probably call for a new radiator too huh? Should I spring for a 9.5lb flywheel? Or wait for next time?

Well all I'm looking for is some feedback, a time frame that this will most likely take to get the parts in and installed. My dad has worked on roataries quite a bit, seeing as how he owned an import/domestic shop for 30 years he's seen his share, so the experience is not a problem, not to mention I know enough about the car to manage around my dad's unorthodox methods with repairing cars, but anyways... any thoughts? June 1st is when I want my car done by, it's far away, but I work full time and have school and another part time job so I'm allowing some room for other priorities.

Steve Kan is the man for tuning. Gotham Racing is a good bunch of guys too. I've bought some stuff from them and I've been VERY satisfied.
PFC is a good idea too. Remember with 1600's you have to get a new fuel rail. 1200's and 1300's will drop right in. You can stay with seq but maybe clean it up a little with the simplified seq?
I didn't get the 9.5 flywheel, I bought the 12lb one instead. Couldn't tell that much difference so I can't say too much on flywheels.
What about an IC???

You might want to look for a cat back exhaust to go with the mid pipe and down pipe, and I would suggest an upgraded intercooler if you go over 12psi (that seems to be the max on the stock one from what I've read). I agree w/ what everyone else has said so far. GothamRacing def has a very good reputation...I have yet to hear of any complaints about them.

PFC, DP/MD/catback, and IC are a must. The flywheel is a good idea, but are you running a stock clutch? Cuz if you are, you're gonna need a new heavy duty clutch that can handle the extra HP...so might as well do that at the same time.

If you do have an aftermarket clutch, my recommendation would be save your money, and get the flywheel later, when you blow your clutch. No sense in paying for all that labor twice...

Oh and also, while the advice you'll get here is good, don't pass up on getting advice from Mr. Kan himself too.

One more thing...I've read many a thread about 1300cc injectors getting stuck, and ppl blowing their motors as a result. I have yet to hear of an issue w/ 1600cc injectors, so from that perspective, I think peace of mind is worth the extra money for the new fuel rail. You're gonna invest enough money as it is in the engine. Might as well do everything to protect that investment.

steve is a great guy to work with, i am sure you will be more than satisfied. i think the power fc is an excellent management system for your car.

as to the various power subsystems that go w modding the fd i think of them this way...

there are 2 levels of modding the engine.

one level is to (about) 410 rwhp. if you mod it to 410 or less you can run the stock fuel rails. switch your secondary fuel injectors to the primary rail and pick up 1300s and use them as secondaries. the power fc runs that combo smooth as silk. get your self a cosmo/supra pump and slap it in. at the 410 or less level you don't need to touch your ignition... just run a set of 9 ngks. you should get an intercooler. with so many people wanting the fmic there are lots of really nice conventionally located intercoolers in the forums classified section and they work great. i would pull off the power steering, a-c if you can live without it, the airpump and find a set of pulleys to slow the alternator. combine all this w steve tuning your engine and end of story.

OTOH, if you want more than 410 rwhp.... virtually nothing from the prior list works... you need ignition, different fuel rails, more fuel pump more clutch...it goes on and on.

there is a really nice sweet spot w the rx7 around 400 rwhp. steve kan tuned a friend's rx6 turbo'd rx7 to that level and it really really rips yet it doesn't have to have all of the second level stuff on it.

If I do buy an intercooler, I will most likely go FMIC, although a V setup is tempting... how much work is that? I do have a stage 3 clutch, but I agree with you about the flywheel, that's what I started this thread for, to get the simple advice that I wasn't considering. And no a/c is not really something I am interested in doing, my car's AC broke last summer and the leather seats made it unbearable. I'd walk out of my car with sweat pouring off of me. So far we are looking at motor, IC, PFC, fuel pump, 1300cc injectors, exhaust, and we're good to go? Not to mention the RX-8 shift nob, but that's completely off the subject, I love the look though!

As long as I'm here, and some people are paying attention to this thread...I don't know much about it so I don't know what to search for, but about 2-3 months ago there was this huge rave about this exhaust, there was a soundclip imported into the thread... it was a really exotic exhaust, I believe the thread had ferrari or lambo posted all over it, I'd like some help finding it if anyone would be willing to help, Mahjik perhaps?

my advice would be to do what i did - talk to your tuner/builder and tell him what you are looking to do and budget and have him tell you what you need. that way you stick to your budget and aren't trying to cobble shit together.

if you wind up needing a motor rebuild remember to replace underhood fuel lines, fuel pulsation dampener, vacuum lines, any hard to get to coolant hoses and motor mounts, clutch and/or flywheel. maybe new wiring harness also. mines got 120k miles and the wires are sooo brittle. at that mileage if you don't need the items in the above list already you will soon. its cheaper to do it now if you can afford it. i don't see how/why you think you need 1300 injectors and a fuel pump if you are staying with stock twins.

add all this shit together and i think a vmount is out of the question unless you got $$ to piss away. definitely get a radiator and don't forget to pay off you student loans and save for a house someday or at least gtf out of dad's house so you can get some more booty. :)

Lol, I do have a lil $$ to piss away as cocky as that sounds...things are pretty much set to work out. Getting my car fixed for the summer, and buying a house in the winter. I will consider the wiring harness as an expense, not a bad idea, but I don't really want the hastle of installing it, oh well I guess. As for the fuel comments, it's just for future turbo upgrades. Like I said, money really isn't an object right now, I have 2 jobs, and 2 lawsuits going on right now, not to mention I go to community college on a scholarship right now, and will receive a full ride when I get my assosciates, so student loans aren't a factor either. I'm not rich, but I have enough money to buy my house, which was my #1 priority, and now I am going to have enough for my car, so it just worked out and so happens that I want my car this summer since I can't drive it in the winter. I don't like the thought of spending more than $7,000 without upgrading the turbos, so perhaps the v mount is out of the question, but oh well, maybe I'll read up on SMIC to see if those float my boat. And I don't have all the money in the world lol, I refuse to spend over $10,000 on my car this summer.

Well anyways guys, just start throwing prices at me, and tell me whether you're low or highballing the prices, keep in mind that no mechanics other than my dad will be involved, and Kan to tune it...

All i have to say is if you pick gotham you made a very good choice.. see sig.. they are a great bunch of guys!!

I drove my car down from St Louis to have them rebuild mine. I don't regret it one bit.
They keep you up to date on their process and suggest (not push) things you didn't consider that might be worth replacing.

I am going to also agree. I have dealt with many of the top performance shops in the country over the past years...tripoint...xs engineering...rotary reliability and racing....and gotham has thus far been the hands down best choice I have made for my fd.

I will have my new motor and single turbo up and running in about three weeks.

as far as this thread goes....i would just ask them what you need. rich and the boys are an honest bunch I believe. They will know what your vehicle needs more than any of us.

The only problem is that Gotham is not going to see my car, I'm pulling my motor and buying a new one and installing it. I'll buy new fuel and vacuum lines, and probably a new wiring harness. And the new unbreakable seals seem like a pretty good expense as well.
