You are right. There is certainly a hole in the wall that divides the inner and outer oil control rings. This would definitely allow oil to bypass the oil control rings and create the smoke screen I experienced. In addition, there may also be a hole on the outer wall of the outside groove, leading into the interior of the rotor.

I am on the hunt for another rotor now.

That rotor is an expensive paperweight. I've never seen that before, ever.
