computer question

ok im in the middle of doing alot to my car and i was going to buy a power fc but im thinking on not getting one and getting a remapped comp that is set for 400 whp at 15 lbs. all i wanted was around 400 anyway and the price diffrence is alot and i would also get an afc with the remapped comp any opinions. money is an issue so dont say pfc just cause its better i already know that. i just want to know the reliability of a remapped basically.

You cannot run 400 rwhp on any mapped ecu. Nor is the S-AFC usable on an FD.

If you are pushing for that kind of power, you NEED a standalone ecu such as the PFC, Haltech, Microtech, Wolf, or AEM. The PFC is by far the easiest install and setup of the standalones and, combined with the datalogit, does nearly everything you'd ever need an ecu to do.

i guess im getting a pfc then

Please don't take offense, but it doesn't sound like you are familiar enough with the FD to mod the car yourself to those power levels.....I would contact a good tuner/shop in your area (I believe Demetrious is the THE rotary guy in that part of the world), tell them your goals, and let them put together your setup and tune it.

lol, yea i can, sorry i didnt know that a remapped comp cant make 400 hp. but it says it can? there probably lieing. it dosent even matter thou i really was just wondering if i could get away with a remapped comp. my friends supra is running like 800 hp with a remapped comp a afc and vpc, but its a diffrent car. just for asking y cant you use an afc?

alberto_mg Jun 30, 2005 12:36 PM

which ecu are you talking about? what mods will you have?

for 400hp you are probably talking about a single turbo upgrade. most remapped ecus that i am aware of are mapped for stock twins and i think stock injectors. by mapped we are talking about injector sizes, timing and fuel maps etc. which would be different for a single turbo application.

To run 400 rwhp, you need larger injectors. Only a standalone computer will allow for this. An S-AFC allows very crude fuel adjustments and that's about it, it does nothing for the timing requirements -- it's just not suitable for FDs running at these power levels (and can't handle injector adjustments either!).

In addition, there are many advantages of running a good standalone vs a remapped ecu -- smoother operation, sensor monitoring, datalogging, adjustability of MANY parameters (temp fans come on, etc).

I can't understand why anyone would want their RX-7 to produce much above 300 HP for driving on the street. At that level, it is faster than just about any other street legal car, still (it was really ahead of its' time).

To get your car above that 300 HP (out of the engine) level, you will be spending lots more money, you will have lots of trouble breaking parts like half shafts and diff mounts, and you will be constantly tuning the car to keep it stable.

The exception is if you are racing the car. Then you would, or should, expect to spend lots, repair often, and have a hard to drive vehicle.

If you cant understand why anybody would want an FD with above 300hp you obviously havent driven an FD with more power than that. Its not like you have to mash around all the time. You can drive 350+hp FD's around in a civilized fashion too...

im only really going for 400 topps i really want about 350-375 i already have a kaaz diff, diff brace engine torque brace custom tranny mount and an act 6 puck but i think im taking it out for the street strip disc i know the pressure plate is the same maybe i can just buy a friction disc its fairly new?

I've put over 15k miles on my setup making 360 whp daily and sometimes more on the weekends when some 100 octane is in the tank (combined with more boost of course). If 300 hp makes you happy, by all means, leave yours that way, but I'm getting ready to upgrade/rebuild my turbo and shoot for over 500 rwhp. I'll still run somewhere in the high 300s/low 400s as a "daily" setting, although I don't drive the FD all that much during the week.

I drove my car at ~300 rwhp about for 3 years. I guess I just got tired of it and had to up the boost a little bit. Now I am getting bored with ~350. It's time to go single and get up in the mid 400s. :) I'm a few thousand $$ short of that though. It boils down to perception.
