Compression Question
 

I posted a thread a few weeks ago about the problems I am having with my engine and my warranty company. Well it turns out that my car requires a new lower gasket on the intake manifold and while doing this they also discovered that there was a problem with the turbos. They said the exhaust port is cracked. Anyways the warranty company is covering these items.

So last compression test my compression was in the mid 6's for the first rotor and the high 6's for the second, which is below Mazda's minimum allowed compression. The warranty company says that they will not consider covering me for a new engine until the other work is done and a new compression test is then done. They figure that repairing the intake leak and the turbo problem will fix the low compression. In a way I can see this thinking, but I am not sure that it will have that much effect on the compression to bring it into the 7's.

Any one else have any ideas or opions on this.

well hey its thier money, if they want to spend $1500 to put turbos and an intake gasket on a bad motor, i dont see what choice you have. i doubt that the intake gasket would affect the compression numbers, noticably

Fixing an intake leak is only going to make your compression numbers *lower*, if it changes them at all.

I thought it might not have much of a positive effect on the compression. Their idea is that right now there isn't the correct volume of air being put into the rotor housing so that in turn is causing the compression to be lower.

The only problem is that the warranty expires on the 30th of May. It seems to me like they might be trying to run out the warranty. Considering my car has been in the shop for the last 2 weeks and it doesn't look like they will be done the intake or turbos by the end of this week. Waiting on the turbos, coming from Florida.

Seems like a bad bet for them, if they are trying to run out the warranty. Isn't there a clause in your warranty about "mechanical problems documented before the end of the warranty period" and how they're liable for such problems?

I would think that most exhaust port on the turbo have cracks from heat anyway, I havent pulled a single turbo off that didnt have cracks whether the turbo was working correctly or not...
