Compression gauge
I'm thinking about checking the compression of my rotors. . .I've never had them checked and I'm curious. . .even though the car seems to be running great right now.
I would like to do it myself, as I see it's not too difficult. Any recommendations of a particular guage to buy? Also, any other words of advice? By the way, I have guages on my A/C charging manifold. . .could I just buy an adaptor and use the high pressure guage? |

Thanks for the quick reply mo. . .so pretty much any piston compression guage will work, huh? They're not too expensive, I found a mityvac kit on ebay for $50, and some cheapos for around $20. I'll probably get a nice set to keep in the garage.

Those are pretty awesome, and seem pretty reasonably priced for such a nice unit. . .just a little more than what I need right now.

You can make the same thing for about $200 is you know basic electronics.
DATAQ for the controll box and software for about $25. 0-250 psi, 0-5VDC pressure transducer for about $120. It requires a 10-30VDC power supply and my battery drops below 8 when cranking so I made a small battery for that. A dapter for the transducer to spark plug hole with quick disconnect. About $40. |
I've used a nearly identical setup as above for years. I've found the following transducer to be less than reliable though. http://www.ttiglobal.com/Product.asp...CategoryID=247 They had been available for about $120 but the price has since went up. Do not know why they failed but they would sit in the tool box for a few weeks then the next time I wanted to use it they were dead. I recently saw that FJO offers a similar transducer for their electronic pressure gauges. Best part is they can be had for about $75. Part number SHP0200 is a 0-200 psi sender. Same 0-5V linear output.

I have seen some advertised cheap transducers that have a very low cyclic life.
Some may not be able to handle oil. I use Measurement Specialties, INC (MSI) transducer. Model MSP-300-250-P-4-N-1. |

could the datalogit be used to log the 0-5V signal from one of these? can it log while the engine cranks?

Really, I just use a plain old piston compression tester with the schrader valve removed. Mostly you just want to see if there are 3 even pulses on each rotor. General motor strength I normally just look at the vacuum it's pulling - 15 and up, it's fine, below 15" and it's a bit on the weak side.
