check this link out

I prefer to use the compression tester for a rotary engine but if you can a piston engine compression tester will work.

The standard piston compression tester will work just fine if you suspect a blown apex seal. There are a couple of occasions where it doesnt tell the whole story. Are you checking just to check, or think you have an engine issue.

I am getting low vacum readings. It sits at like 15 at the first start up at about1500rpms but once it warms up it sits at 11 to 12 at 1000 rpm.

djseven Apr 10, 2009 05:11 PM

Sits or flucuates? Did the vacuum recently drop? Stock port, street port?

yourmom23 Apr 10, 2009 05:19 PM

Once it warms up it sits at about 11 or 12 and id doesnt really fluctuat. No street port pretty sure, it is a jdm motor that was in it when i bought the car, i think it is proboble tierd. I also think the motor may have got dusted a bit i used yellow foam filters and damn trucks kicked up a bunch of dust, the foam is just way to open lets too much though.

I just got a compression checker today so i will post the results im crossing my fingers!

Good luck :)

Well doesnt look good. It only yeilded 82psi in the secound rotor, my batery read 12v on my multi meter but i am going to charge it up just to make sure.

yourmom23 Apr 10, 2009 08:53 PM

Well doesnt look good my numbers are 90 and 85

djseven Apr 10, 2009 10:48 PM

It could possibly run for a while in its current condition, all depends on what you want to do. Since you know it doesnt have a blown seal now would be the cheapest time for a rebuild as you dont have to replace a rotor or a housing.

yourmom23 Apr 11, 2009 12:04 AM

for sure i would rather do it asap, how much about for all the gaskets and seels

WaachBack Apr 11, 2009 04:25 AM

A rebuild kit can cost anywhere from $500 to $1400.

Go48 Apr 11, 2009 05:57 AM

Before you spend a couple of thousand dollars on a rebuild, spend $60.00 or so and have the compression checked at a shop or by someone with a proper rotary engine compression tester that knows what they are doing. No sense doing a rebuild if you don't really need it.

BTW, if you do plan to rebuild I would recommend that you get one of the several rebuild DVDs that will show you what a rebuild entails.

Good advice. Bruce Turrentine's rebuild video really helped me when I rebuilt my motor. The Pineapple racing videos are also good.

That would be a nice option but living in montana there is no one here that does rotorys, not even a mazda dealership:icon_tdow
