Coil test question

so i want to test the coils in my car but im not sure what to set the multimeter at. 200, 2k ,20k ,200k or 2m? never really done this before, and the FSM doesnt say what to set it at

Trailing Coil:

When testing the primary coil (A to B) winding set your ohm meter to 200. Meter should display around (0.6) ohms.

When testing the secondary (A to T) winding set your meter to 200k or 20M. Meter shouldn't read anything because resistance is infinite.

Leading Coil:

When testing the primary coil (A to B) winding set your meter to 200. Meter should display around (0.6) ohms

When testing the secondary (L1 to L2) winding set your meter to 20k. Just tested a good coil and the meter displays (12.56) i.e. 12.56k ohms.

Hope this helps.

Steve.

yes that helps alot, exactly what i needed to know, don't know why they don't say it in the fsm.. also what about the high-tension lead, which i believe are the sparkplug wires correct? what would i setting would i use to test that? i believe it should be at 16k if i am reading correctly

Yes, the high-tension leads are your spark plug wires. The FSM says 16k ohms per 3.28ft of length, however, our stock plug wires are about half that length so I would expect around 8k ohms. And yes, set your meter to 20k again.

Just one thing to add. Steve is right on with the procedure and the values. When I tested mine I touched the ohmmeter leads together first to check lead resistance. On my meter this was about .6 ohms. When I took my readings I subtracted this amount from the reading I got on A to B. So 1.1 ohms minus .6 ended up with a coil resistance of .5 ohms (give or take). Does that sound correct?

You put the meter at a value higher than what your test should result in. If the spec is 16k, set the multimeter to 20k range because that covers 0-20k ohms.

Basically, use the closest range to your expected values without going below.

so i finally got the time and took out the coils to test them,

Trailing 1: 0.8-1.0
Trailing 2: 0.9-1.0
Leading AB: 0.7-0.8
Leading 1-2: 13.44

so i just want to make sure with everyone are these all good so i can put my car back together?

You should be good. Most electronics on the car are fine, if it tests open circuit or closed circuit, that's when you have a problem.

The stock coils are pretty hardy and really only fail when something wrong happened to the car, like the coil wires getting shorted out.

FD Stock coil

I just had my intake manifold off to do some vacuum hose work and I decided to test my stock coils. The trailings were fine. My leading was fine for the primary winding but the L1 to L2 showed infinity rather than approx. 10k to 16k ohms. What does this mean with the secondary winding out? The car seems to be working fine. I don't have any ignition breakup I can tell even at higher boost 14-15 psi. What should I do, replace it anyway? I have a fairly moded car and a HKS Twin Power in place also and I am going to go to WI soon.
