Clutch Switch?
 

I have been having an idle fluctuation problem. tried cleaning everything, making sure linkages were free and not taut, adjust dashpot, etc etc.

It turns out that the problem only happens when the clutch is pushed in AND the car is in gear.. eg.

Coming to a stop in neutral, whether clutch is in or out, no change/fluctuation, steady 900-1000 rpm. As soon I put the car in gear with the clutch in, it will start to bounce from 800-1700.

Does this sound like the clutch switch, or another related switch on the trans somewhere? I have searched and it seems those with the clutch switch problem it was regardless of whether the car was actually in gear or not.

Come on, even JONSKI doesn't have the answer to this? I thought he knew everything ;)

I guess I will order the clutch switch and swap it out, see if it fixes it. If it does, I gues I answered my own ??

That sounds about right. Just be sure to replace the right clutch switch - there are 2. You want to replace the one which would be above your toes if you had your foot on the clutch.

Search for the old thread about this to see what I mean. This fix solved my idle bouncing.

Thats why I am thinking it might be the switch on the transmission itself..

Could the Neutral switch be the culprit? I hear its a bitch to get to..

Well the pedal switch is cheap, perhaps I cross my fingers and try that first

What about if your A/C is on? Does it make the problem any worse? If it does, it's most definitely the clutch switch, if not, I'm not sure what it would be. It could still be the clutch switch I guess...but most likely not since when the A/C is on and the clutch is depressed, the idle should go up...

Well one of the clutch switches is easy to check, just get on your back and crawl up under the dash. At the top of the clutch pedal you will see a switch with a white plunger thing on it.. just push the clutch pedal in and out and make sure that switch is popping back out when the clutch pedal is out.

i say cltuch switch. htey are like 18 bucks and easy as hell to change. my car did the same thing. after i changed the switch it worked like a champ. shit for 18 bucks you cant go wrong. if it isnt broke now it will be in the future, so buy one and see.

whats a clutch switch, btw?? does this only applies to manual 7?

Welp, replaced the swtich at the pedal today, no luck. Does the same thing. I can adjust the pedal height, but is there a method to adjust the slave cylinder? Perhaps its dragging when in gear or something.. I dunno, I hate tranny stuff, heh, my only b in autoshop :(

Anyone ever changed the neutral switch? Is it so labor intensive I should just wait a few months for til I need a new clutch and do it then? I cant even find a refernce in the service manual, except when removing the trans.

And yes, I would imagine it is only on Manual FD's Cihuuy. The clutch switch is the device (i think) that requires you to have the clutch pushed in to activate the starter motor. It might be on the brake pedal on an automatic FD..(It is on my 90 T-Bird SC)
