Clutch Question...

Hey everyone, just had a little question about the clutch...

After I get my car tuned, I'm looking to get a modest 300-310rwhp. My rear tires are 45-50?/235/17, and I'm using the stock clutch. 52,000 miles, still on the original I'm guessing, but the previous owners definitely didn't race the car(very old). With this setup, do you think I'll have problems with the clutch slipping? And if so, what numbers should I put down hp-wise until I can change it out? Thanks for the help. ~A-Rod

I have about 50k miles on mine and a very modest 300 rwhp. If I go WOT my clutch slips like there's no tomorrow... I'm talking about redlining in 3rd going 10 miles an hour.

I'm running 245/45/17.

I'm putting in a ACT Xtreme Pressure Plate, with Street Disc and XACT StreetLite Flywheel tomorrow... we'll see how it does.

ha... great... not what I wanted to hear. Guess I'm going to have to either change that out or keep the boost down. Let me know what your old clutch looks like(condition).

Noxlupus 05-08-07 12:54 PM

No problem, I'll take some pictures of it and post them here.

While my clutch disc was actually fine, the stock pressure plate would not hold high rpm WOT once I hit over 260 rwhp.

I agree with Rynberg. The main reason I'm changing out the disc is that I'll already be in that area. Might as well change it now.

Exactly same situation. Very pronounced when hitting boost on 4th gear. Switched to Exedy stage 1 organic and all is well. Now car brakes traction on 2nd gear under boost going straight. Old clutch doesn't look bad at all. I even kept it, should throw it away probably..

i have ~300whp with my original clutch. My car has 37k original miles and their is 0 slipping for me. I do have original rims with 245 tires. I guess i should expect to get some slipping in the near future tho.

Lol at the old comment, I've seen some senior citizens who practically fly around town.

Ha, idk man, this guy could barely get in and out of the car, that's why he was selling it.

And lol at my original statement, I can't believe I put the profile before width.

So how did this work out? And what do you think of the pedal effort? I'd welcome your impressions since I've got an Extreem PP that I'm thinking about putting in. A full report is indicated....

I'm taking the car out for a... "spirited" shake down tonight and will post a review for you this weekend! :)

Monsterbox 05-11-07 05:02 PM

if you are overwhelming the clutch with too much power will you smell it at least? iahve a 94 with 36k miles on it pushing 300wrhp and i always wait till im off the clutch completely before boosting.....it seems to be doing fine and i never smell it burning....so should i still be thinking bout replacing it? will it smell when it is wearing?

rynberg 05-12-07 12:08 AM

If it's not slipping, then it's fine. It's not going to smell unless it's slipping....

Master_Tao 05-13-07 12:45 AM

I've got 310 +/-10 HP. My stock clutch slipped like a b1tc#. I installed an act SS with HD pressure plate and now it is perfect.

Well, let’s see there isn’t much to tell other then damn my car pulls hard! I didn’t get a chance to take it to the track to see any hard numbers but I can tell you that it’ll break loose in first, and second if I go WOT. I think I heard a small screech in third but I’m not sure.

The clutch feels tight and hard. A little hard to get used to at first, especially with only an inch of travel for it fully engaged and disengage and vice versa. I’m not sure if this can be adjusted, we’ll see. Overall I love it! Though at times it feels and sounds like the rear end is about to tear off the rear diff due to the sudden torque being applied.

The lighten flywheel is great, it allows the engine to spin more freely and allows the turbos to spool faster (or at least it feels that way). At first RPM matching was a bit difficult but nothing that I wasn’t able to get used to again within a few shifts. The car defiantly feels faster, now just need to prove it. Though, hard to do when I don’t have pre clutch install times…

If you ask me, I would suggest you install that baby in ASAP!!! My car was fun before, but it has awaken the beast within!

Ha, send some funds over and I'll get right on it!

Thanks for the feedback, now I know what I have to do.

How did the old clutch "look" to the eye, worn?

Similar observation after removing the transmission on mine at ~60k for the 5th gear synchro. The disc looked OK but the PP had some hot spots like it might have been slipping a little. I never noticed it or smelled anything and I was/am still pretty stock.
