clutch problems

I was out playing with the car (maybe a little rough) last night. After a few practice launches i decided to go home. I stopped and eased out 1st gear and clutch pedal felt "clunky" and the car shivered at low speed. I get home and decide to let it cool down and try it in the morning. Well its still shivering as i ease out the clutch in 1st but the car doesn't shiver as i get into higher speeds and gears. any thoughts on what it might be? oh the clutch oem also. thanks guys

josh

anybody think its "chatter?"

Sounds like clutch shudder. This can go on without any ill effects other than being annoying. You probably hurt your flywheel.

dont know about that, just went for a drive and couldn't get to go into gear :anger: god why did i have to play so hard, if you make it go away i promise not to do it again

Why don't you open up the inspection plate and take a look?

TRISPEEDFD3S 08-08-06 03:52 PM

Same thing happen to a civic I had. What happened was I was shifting real hard and fast also, and I chipped a peice of my clutch disk. Do you hear a clutter noise? If this is the same problem as you have, then it explains why you can't go in gear.

You don't need a lift, jackstands will do just fine.

21K95RX7 08-08-06 09:35 PM

i kinda have a fear of being crushed :) but do you mean jackstand for changing a tire or will i need to go to auto store and get one that will get the car off the ground more. ive never used the jack in the FD so i dont know how high it goes. i do have some rhino ramps will that allow me enough room to get the plate off?

21K95RX7 08-08-06 09:37 PM

haha searched jackstands on google, any brands i should look for?

Mahjik 08-08-06 09:42 PM

I've never used the ramps, so I have no idea how high they will get you.

With this car, I would suggest getting a good set of jackstands and a floor jack unless you have a mechanic you trust who is going to do all your work.

Something like this:

Jackstands

Floor jack

I'm not a fan of that jack as it only goes up about 14", but it is light.

harbor freight.

21K95RX7 08-08-06 10:09 PM

yea the ramps only go up 6''-7'' so not much room to work under a car like this, but thanks alot guys for the help

I must add this happened on my friend's WRX. He grinded trying to get it into gear, and it had an annoying shudder. A week later his clutch gave out completely and it just spun freely.

21K95RX7 08-09-06 10:38 AM

yea luckily i have a daily driver so i don't have to worry too much and take my time

21K95RX7 08-09-06 05:52 PM

hey guys just took the car to a mechanic and he calls me back to show what he says are bad rear mounts and motor mounts. now i don't know much about how much elasticity or play a motor mount should have but these had about 1''-1.5'' range of motion. but anyways i still think its the clutch and he thinks its the motor mounts. what do you guys think?

windom 08-09-06 06:15 PM

If you're getting a shuddering from an easy take off in first gear from a stop, it sounds like the face of your flywheel might be warped, or your clutch disk is damaged. Once the clutch stops slipping and you start moving down the road it will stop. This is a drivetrain issue.

21K95RX7 08-09-06 07:22 PM

just a question should i replace the motor mounts if they have that much elasticity? what are the rear mounts called?

windom 08-09-06 11:03 PM

I'm not sure. But I know my motor mounts are shot. The motor and tranny likes to buck under boost. I don't have any clutch issues. I am replacing them ASAP though.
