Clutch noise

I have an ACT heavy duty clutch. Just recently it has been making a noise like medal on medal scratchingwhen the clutch is out and when its in the noise goes away. I was woundering if anyone new what that sound was and if they could give me advice. Thanks alot

sounds like the throwout bearing.

I have the same problem -- but the noise is *really* quiet. The thing is, my clutch only has ~1400 miles on it.

If it were the throwout bearing, you'd hear noise when you pushed the clutch pedal down, not when it was released.

Is it a constant noise like a grinding, or more like something rattling around? Does it still engauge/disengauge smoothly? Did either of you inspect/replace the pilot bearing when you installed the clutch?

I had that problem and it was the Throw out bearing.

twice on seperate occasions.

i found out that my driving style needed to be amended since I love to down shift and use the engine for breaking all the time.

Even in first gear.

I just loved the sound of it.

But that came at a cost.

It wore out the TOB after a few thousand miles.

Conclusion - minimize down shifting.

I had that problem on my YZF R6...Was the throwout bearing. Released it made noise and engaged it didn't make any noise. Don't ask me how to fix it.

WaLieN 10-29-03 03:59 PM

Well, for me, it doesn't sound that loud. The thing is, I'm not hard on the transmission *AT ALL*.

floman 10-29-03 04:08 PM

Well what should I do about it. If it was the throwout bearing, is that a pain to fix and how much does it cost.

BATMAN 10-29-03 04:42 PM

the only pain is taking the tranny off.

I recommend a tube of redline grease for the spindles and clutch fork.

Really makes the clutch pedal feel smoother.

floman and Walien,

Are your 5th gear synchros shredded too?

This could actually be a transmission bearing that you easily hear at idle in neutral with the clutch engaged (pedal out) but when you disengage the clutch (pedal depressed) the sound goes away completely (since the load on the transmission is extremely small).

The sound is there when the clutch is disengaged and it is not when it is engaged.

I couldn't really tell you if my 5th gear syncros are shredded or not -- it seems to go in/out of 5th gear just fine.
