Clutch and Flywheel combos
 
My fd is getting a new motor so I want to put in a new clutch and flywheel combo. I'm using the car for aggressive street driving and occasional track/autocross. The shop that my car is at wants me to get a fidenza flywheel and an a.c.t. Three-puck clutch. I was just wondering what everyone else has tried, suggests, or anyone who could shed some light on my shops choices.

a 3-puck is pretty extreme for a street car...a 6 puck is pretty good for both worlds, and ive heard great things about the exedy hyper single plate.

Terrible clutch for your use....and I've never heard of a Fidenza flywheel.

If you are making less than 400 rwhp, I suggest an ACT Street/Strip clutch with a quality "brand name" flywheel -- SR Motorsports, Racing Beat, ACT.

There is ZERO reason to go with a puck clutch for your use, unless you are making some serious beans under the hood. The ACT S/S will hold fine and will actually be pleasant to drive on the street. I would question your shop's knowledge level (unless, as mentioned above, you are 400+ rwhp).

I just installed the ACT Extreme Street, and it perfect, No clutch slip at all... And the pedal isnt too bad, although your leg does get tired after a while. And it slips well in first to get goin.

I have a racing beat flywheel and ACT street/strip clutch - they did not line up quite right, so I ended up using only three of the six bolts to get the pressure plate to mount flush to the flywheel. Well that worked for about 3000 miles...and now this week's project is to take out the engine&tranny to investigate/repair/replace the damage caused by at least one of those bolts shearing...I don't remember the details of exactly why they didn't line up, - don't know if it's design problem with one of the aftermarket parts or if I just missed something, but maybe I'll post more after I get it apart and take a closer look. Anybody else heard of this problem between ACT & racing beat? I bought both parts new...

I suggest using a Spec clutch and since you are using it more on the street i would also suggest getting it spring loaded.

BILLET STEEL

precision ground to mate perfectly to the crank with minimum run out and

materials we offer. They are recommended for heavy vehicles in a drag racing
application and for mildly modified street/strip cars.

BILLET ALUMINUM
SPEC billet aluminum flywheels are also CNC machined and exceed SFI standards
for high stress racing applications. These units are recommended for highly
modified street or racing vehicles, and for mildly modified street cars that
can benefit from reduced rotating mass without the loss of daily drivability.

The body of the flywheel is made of tempered aluminums, either 6061 T6 or 2024
T3, for ultimate strength and lightest possible weight. The 1/4 inch thick
friction plate is a 1050 high carbon alloy, for incredible durability with any
friction disc material, even iron.
The plates are secured to the body by aerospace fasteners or stainless steel
rivets, depending on the application. These fasteners were chosen because of
their exceptional strength and corrosion resistance.
The ring gears are pressed on and secured with grade 10 fasteners. They gear
is also heat treated for longevity.

Multidisk and Lever Style Clutches

What the heak?? You used 3 of the 6 bolts to mount the pressure plate?? Dude, I'm not trying to be mean but what did you think was gonna happen after you did this. Do you always have a box of left over bolts whenever you work on the car?
Do yourself a favor and don't post anymore hack jobs like this, you're embarrassing yourself. If you don't know, then call and ask someone or an RX7 shop or anyone in the know. Dude you're gonna end up hurting yourself with stupid mistakes like this, I'm pretty sure you don't have a blow-proof bellhousing around that clutch/flywheel combo. You're lucky it didn't let go on a launch or otherwise, it would have taken your foot/leg right off.

yes, it was stupid, and I knew it wasn't a great idea at the time, but I was in a hurry to get it back together then too. No excuse, and I was lucky, but I solved that problem- just bought a new vehicle. So now I can take my time with the FD and do things right - no corner cutting just to get my daily driver working.

ok back to the clutch issue. ive been driving stick since i learned how to drive i wont drive anything else, i bought my fd with a 6 puck, and its a bitch, pain in the ass.
