Cluster problem?

Just a quick question....

Note: No work has been done in the last 2 weeks and the everything was fine until start up last night.

Problem: Both the tach, speedmeter and odometer do not work

i have yet to do much investigating but after my searches it seems the fuse for the cluster includes the temp, oil pressure, and gas gauges. All of those work fine...is it possible to have both the tach and speedometer/odometer go out at the same time? Sounds a lil fishy to me since i already had JUST the tach go out and i replaced the whole cluster.

maybe somebody has come across this..hopefully

its ONLY the tach and speedometer/odometer that dont work.....lights and other gauges work perfect and drivability is not effected.

Thanks in advance

i had this happen to me right after i did my vac hose job. everything went back to normal in a matter of days. i never really knew what made that happen

hmm....very strange!

while driving last night i tried to hit a few potholes to see if it would jar anything back to life but nothing.....

seeing as i didnt take anything apart to cause this....im wondering if just leaving as is will fix itself like u mentioned.

I have the spare cluster that i could mix and match with this half working one but thats a lot of work if its gunna fix itself...lol

BTW, did just your tach and speed/odo go out while u still had working fuel, oil, and temp gauges?

i looked over the wiring diagram and it seems like the cluster is all wired in the same circuit so it doesnt make sense that half work and half dont if its some kind of electrical problem. I realize it could just be failed parts but the fact that BOTH failed at the same moment leads me to think theres a cause somewhere and not just components at the end of their life.

be very careful if you play around with your cluster, extremely delicate parts

definately....im just really trying to find out what could cause this and thought maybe somebody else had come across this problem that didnt fix it with magic ;-)

you might have a problem with the flex print connectors from the cluster. The connectors (plugs) are hard plastic and the flex print may not make proper contact.

Remove the cluster and inspect the flex print. Use an eraser to "clean" the contacts of each flex print.

You want to bend the flex print out in a way to allow proper contact with the hard plastic plug. Be careful not to tear the flex print.

Then button it back up and see if that fixes it. I hope you have some patience!

ok i will look into that.....ive had the whole dash apart a few times before its just all the plastic is sooo brittle that it seems one thing or another always breaks when it has to come apart.

i guess i was just hoping that there was a fuse or certain sensor that somehow correlated to everything.

took the car for a quick drive today and shes a beast...just one that doesnt like to tell me whats goin on (rpm and speedwise heh)

if you said that all other idiot lights and gauges work it wouldn't be the Meter Fuse (15A). If that fuse blows you would get no idiot lights or gauge movement nor will the odometer come on. Also the coolant fans will not come on if that fuse blows.

You would still get dash light since that belongs on another circuit.

i know...thats why i am so confused

ALL three went out together

the most logical solution is to examine the flex print. especially if you removed the cluster. i'll even bet a wooden nickel that fixes it.

TpCpLaYa Jan 4, 2008 12:57 PM

well im going to remove the cluster today most likely

the cluster/gauges/flex print have not been touched or removed in over 2 years

its very seldom that this flex malfunctions. but theres no harm in checking anyway...
