Cleaning oil/dirt off motor and engine bay?

Well now that I have my engine out and starting to fix up the oil leaks.... it's time to clean up the mess the leaks made on my car and motor.

Whats a good product to use on the motor and engine bay. I kinda would like somthing I can use that I don't have to worry about it killing the plastic or the alunimum (sp?) so I don't have to sit there w/ a tooth brush and work every part seperate not to get this solvant on this part... and so on. See my other thread for pics of how dirty it is :o:

Also... what kind of things should I be carefull on when cleaning the bay/motor?

tia, chris

Man I dont use anything special, but I use Armorall Muitpurpose cleaner in the Aersol can, its the green can. That works GREAT! Leaves the rubber and plastic looking like new, and takes off all the crap oil and dirt. I used a lot of products before, but I think this works best, mostly cuz I like the hoses to be nice and clean without all the work. Just spray it on, let it sit and hose it off.. Dry where needed...looks great!

have you tried Simple Green yet? it works good but make sure you wash it off aluminum very thoroughly.

simple green or any engine degreaser will help out a lot.

water, and a toothrush.. Works perfectly.. just rinse often... maybe a mild solution of simple green in the water

Simple green for me too.

Never tried grease lightening, it's supposed to be good too.

Most of those products will damage paint, so I would recommend just some dish soap and a good brush for the engine bay itself.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys....

Mahjik: thanks... thats what I was wondering... I think I will use dish soap (or car soap) for the painted parts of the bay.

Well I think I will roll the frame out to the driveway and start cleaning her today!

Purple Muscle works great. Otherwise any engine degreaser works fine...

Guys, the best cleaner is S-100.

Go to a motorcycle store and buy a bottle at $14. I've used this since 1985 and nothing else can touch it.

Hey dude,

It's me. Nice to see the pics of that clean engine bay. Great job. I think John Z used Simple Green on his with great results. Personally, I've used S-100 and also like the way it works. It does need to be rinsed off thoroughly to keep from getting a white film, but it does a great job. However, I know that Simple Green is quite a bit cheaper. I'll try to get you the hose list by sometime Friday. Enjoy the adventure!!

prefer S-100 as well
