Checking out an FD

Hey guys, could you guys see or hear anything out of the ordinary that I should know about just in case, so I won't be wasting my time driving out to see this car? Thanks.

I actually noticed that at around 1:04 there is some hesitation when he revs the engine.

before going anywhere, tell him to show u the compression ratio.

versep Apr 16, 2010 01:41 AM

if you buy her lets go for a cruise haha, i'm around there :icon_tup:

Skip2MyPou Apr 16, 2010 01:49 AM

i'll ask him to make a vid of him doing a compression test.

versep, we can go for a cruise anytime. i have a TII to drive around in right now :)

good stuff. by the way, whereabouts are you located?

proz07 Apr 16, 2010 02:20 AM

some things id be interested in...... mods as he started cold or the temp guage dosent work? cause he had no 3k warmup so guessing emmisions stuff removed. whats the boost pattern or is it non-sequential and if so whats he boosting too on the stock intercooler. if that was a cold start didnt show exhaust to see if white smoke also whats the warm start like? if warm start whats the cold start like? sounds alright though... what about driving trans grinds noises yada yada. is the motor ported? looked like the vac was a touch low if stock. others can comment on that though i cant see if the gauge is in inches or psi.

Thanks for your input proz07. I'm looking for more opinions as well.

SonicFD Apr 16, 2010 03:25 AM

Is the fuel gauge broken??
How long has it been sitting with the tank that low? Get him to put in some fresh gas. Going to need a test drive video if you're a fair distance away from there.

proz07 Apr 16, 2010 03:28 AM

looking again that was a hot start... oil pressure looks extremly low for cold start. so theres something with the guages not working. so looks like you need more info in my opinion.

i live at univercity beside sfu during school, but back at delta during the weekends.

what about you?

Chris_V Apr 16, 2010 01:51 PM

Compression test it. Ask what mods he has on the car and boost patterns. If he is boosting anything over 10 psi on stock maps then that engine is in trouble.

Skip2MyPou Apr 16, 2010 03:15 PM

I live in surrey. Yeah I was planning to go do a compression test if videos of the car show that the engine is in decent condition. I don't wanna waste my time and gas driving down to where the car is.

KKMpunkrock2011 Apr 16, 2010 08:43 PM

looks like emissions are still there, I see the air pump, I can't watch the video right now but I'll do it later or tomorrow.

Skip2MyPou Apr 17, 2010 03:27 PM

Here's a view of the exhaust on a cold start I believe... nothing really to say but wow lol.

That thick white smoke doesnt look like my car on startup (condensation). Ask the seller if the car has been overheated that may be the result of blown coolant seals. If your seals are blown you will need to rebuild the engine.

Unless your getting a steal on that car I would walk away.

Skip2MyPou Apr 17, 2010 04:13 PM

Yeah, I'm gonna pass on this car unless the guy is willing to sell it for much cheaper than he's asking.

RX7_12 Apr 18, 2010 11:56 PM

Wow, that looks horrible, it looks like the car is puking. Looks like a mixture of oily coolant. I just bought an RX7 with a blown engine and I paid $3000 (Canadian) cash for it. So I wouldn't pay much for that car if I were you.
How much does he want for it?

Skip2MyPou Apr 19, 2010 12:00 AM

He listed it for 11k haha. I'm probably just gonna walk away from it. I have a feeling that he won't budge on his price. Worth a try though. How much do 13b-rew rebuilds usually cost (ballpark figure)?

turboIIrotary Apr 19, 2010 12:10 AM

the engine is toast he just ran it for five minutes with a blown coolant seal so it is being overheated and he is revving it like crazy so instead of a simple rebuild your going to have to buy a whole new engine. he probably took out the fuse for the gauges so it won't show it overheating.

not even close, you can drive a rotary on a blown coolant seal for a while, hell I did. Never overheated once, I just checked coolant before and after every drive to make sure it wasn't low and never had a problem with overheating. However yes those coolant seals are shot, you might be able to get away with less than a 1000 for the rebuild if you do it yourself. Still I wouldn't pay more than 6k US for that.

KKMpunkrock2011 Apr 19, 2010 01:54 AM

finally watched the vid, looks like coolant and oil, I suspect the turbos. When my coolant seals were shot, it smoked instantly, but whatever the problem is, it's bad. I don't think the car would run if there was that much extra liquid passing through the combustion chamber. I'm no expert tho.

What! How can he expect $11,000 for a car that has a blown engine. That is absurd. The guy I bought mine off wanted $4000 at first and I thought that was too much. Not to mention I noticed that car has like what 150,000 ish km's on it? Mine has around 130,000 on the body and I ended up getting it for $3000.

It is boggling my mind that he could expect that much money from it. Wow.

A Mazda reman will run you about $3000. You might be able to get a rebuild slightly cheaper depending on what is still usable on the current motor, but $3000 is a good ballpark figure. I would also wager those turbos are toast. If you are lucky, you can find a good set of stock twins for around $300-500. The wiring harness is most likely toast, so about $850 there. Injectors will need to be serviced and replacing fuel lines, so around $300. There will be a lot of little things like gaskets, coolant lines, OMP lines and such so I would suggest around $6000 for a budget would make that car drivable again. That doesn't mean there aren't other things to address outside of the engine bay though....
