cheap solution for cracked exhaust housing?
 

Hi, I am new the crowd here and in the middle of a motor swap on a high mileage FD (150K). While disassembling the turbos I saw that the turbo exhaust housing was SEVERELY cracked around the wastegate to the point that there is no way the gate could seal, and some cracks around the area where the gasket seals between the exhaust manifold.

The original plan was to rebuild the stock twins and go non-sequential to simplify the nest of snakes under the intake....but looking at the full NS mods I still need that cracked housing/wastegate to be fully functional correct? Are there any cheap alternatives/replacements available, has anyone had success get the manifolds welded up and remachined?

Any help would be much appreciate... this is my first go around with the rotaries so I am anxious to get this bad boy on the road. I have used the search query quite extensively but have not been able to find anyones solution to the cracked exhaust housings.

Replace the manifold. Its cast iron so it can't be repaired.

Are these readily available? If so how much aprox? I haven't seen them advertised at all or any aftermarket replacement?

cast iron can we welded, its just tricky and requires a tig as well as special rods. it can be done though! to tell you the truth, it might be easier/cheaper though to buy a new manifold rather then to find someone with the skills and the materials to fix it.

they sell the turbo manifolds.Although im not sure if they would work with the stock twins.

You can weld cast iron, but it is tricky. You need a high nickel filler rod and the cast iron needs to be clean, ground where the weld will go, and preheated.

Unless you have an experienced welder do this, it will likely crack again.

Get another housing/manifold.

You can find turbo exhaust manifolds in the "For Sale" Forum pretty often. I have a good conditon (no cracks) exhaust manifold with 20k on it and was asking $30. I converted it to Non-Seq though and went crazy with cutting the fat off it (ie: not very appealing to the eye atm). Expect to pay $25-60.

I'm not thinking very well right now, but if its the exhaust manifold you are looking for I have a mint condition one that I'll do for $40 shipped in the US...if its the log style turbo mani I can't help. I also have nice feedback in the good guy section so no worries

now that i think about it, it seems to me you are talking about the turbo manifold between the 2 twins. I would highly suggest just buying a used set off the parts for sale section and swapping the manifold. New that thing is gonna cost a fortune. Used twins go for peanuts a lot of the time
