cheap FD interior restoration

While I'm aware that nothing's cheap when it comes to these cars, I was wondering something about restoring the interior of the FD.

Mine came with a rather beat up interior that could definitely use a bit of attention. I was wondering if you could remove the main hard plastic interior pieces, sand them down, and repaint them in semigloss black and clearcoat them. My concern would be if you could remove all of the lettered sections so they don't get painted over, but from what I can remember of the interior of my FD, that shouldn't be much of a problem.

Has anybody done this...or have a similar idea about restoring their FD's interior?

Where did you get the acrylic crystal clear stuff? And do I need any sort of special primer, or will any sandable primer do?

I got the Krylon Acrylic Crystal Clear from a Westlake Hardware store. The primer can be any sandable primer.

Mahjik,

It's been 2 years now since you did yours, so how's it holding up?

No problems at all (althought my car doesn't get driven much even when it's in one piece). ;)
