I got some stuff dipped in plain weave carbon fiber, Its a process called hydrographics, I'm really happy of how it turned out. I also went ahead and got the rear strut tower plastic covers done and the hatch divider. Here's some pics

Polak Graphics 04-21-11 12:22 PM

Looks good.

Was it expensive?

rizzxx7 04-21-11 12:24 PM

I got a break since its my friend's shop, its pretty reasonable. I also got the piece that covers the fuel tank on the bottom of the rear bumper

ILoveJDM 04-21-11 12:38 PM

Shouldve got them in twill weave.

theorie 04-21-11 01:01 PM

should have done it with the 3M "dry carbon" wrap if you didn't want to use the real stuff - it looks more realistic.

evot23 04-21-11 01:21 PM

I like the look of it...contact info for the rest of us..?

are you serious? this ish is legit, I can't tell them apart from my real cf pieces. CF sucks a55 on pics but oh well

theorie 04-21-11 01:47 PM

ermmmm....maybe it's just me, but this looks nothing like CF:

https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1303405468

compared to the 3m wrap:

https://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k...thecat/274.jpg

compared to real cf:

whats important is that YOU like it, which you clearly do, so who cares right? :)

edit: found better pic

Agreed, plain weave imo looks like a fake overlay

93rx74lyfe 04-21-11 02:00 PM

Not to be rude but it looks like those fake cf shift knobs at pep boys, no bueno dude.

93rx74lyfe 04-21-11 02:02 PM

Agree, the 3mm film would have looked better.

fendamonky 04-21-11 02:38 PM

Um.... how does one "dip" something in Carbon Fiber???

its not dipped in carbon fiber. it's a process where they float a graphic "film" on water, then dip the part into the water, pressing it though the film. the graphic then sticks to the part, looking like it was printed/painted right on the part itself.

here's another example of what you can do with this process:

my mom has a sunglasses sunvisor clip that looks like this

not even close to looking like carbon fiber.

no offense. just looks like garbage. even though you prob got a good deal on it, should got something creative with the dip atleast.

ive wrapped in the 3m stuff too, its even textured. closest thing to real carbon.

rx7rcer09 04-21-11 03:39 PM

its a cool process and turned out great, but as others have stated it looks like a CF overlay, the 3M wrap looks real.

NoPis10 04-21-11 04:37 PM

It looks like the CF tape you buy at the local PepBoys or Autozone. No where near looking like REAL CF...

Sorry to the OP but it does nothing for me. As long as you are happy then NO worries on what we think. It's YOUR car and do what you will...

I think it is the fact Rizz got it in plain weave opposed to Twill, as that is how most plain weave looks...

Ah, makes sense... I had a feeling Rizz knew better than to believe that CF could be "dipped" onto pieces.

On an aside... I need to get my rear diffuser fixed (PFS kinda cracked it when my car was there last), anybody know of a shop that can fix CF in the VA/DC/MD/NJ area?

prrex4ever 04-22-11 04:35 PM

A good option, not as difficult as wrapping some of those wierd parts I quess.

mkiv98 04-22-11 04:52 PM

Oh lord who wants to be first to get a camo dipped intake manifold for an fd?

Wow

turbodrx7 04-22-11 09:30 PM

I dont think the wood grain is THAT bad...especially with the K series sittin in there.

drunkensmoky 04-23-11 01:40 PM

that wood grain looks retardo lol really sumone had this done

drunkensmoky 04-23-11 01:42 PM

how much for the carbon wrap

MR_Rick 04-23-11 01:51 PM

Yeah, what he^ said.

Really like this finish. Reminds me of My Mazdaspeed 6 interior

http://sourcehydro.com/Common/Images.../Metal/156.jpg

Kristall-99 04-23-11 04:06 PM

Im curious as to what temp this dip procedure can hold up to.

ILoveJDM 04-23-11 07:00 PM

cant believe that alot of you havent heard of this stuff before

check this thread out from awhile back on zilvia..lots of examples..camo, plaid, carbon..money

http://zilvia.net/f/chat/213929-you-dont-have.html

to_slow 04-23-11 08:55 PM

It's looks good... Its the same as the Mazdaspeed rhd version carbon package... :)

hades 04-23-11 09:19 PM

I think the original pictures match our interiors better than the new modern twill patterns. I could be wrong, but I don't think the twill would match too well--not black enough IMO. I the original pictures make me think more of an F1.

XLR8 04-25-11 09:27 PM

I think it would be a great option for worn or faded pieces. You like it, that is what is important.

Personally, I like a stock mint interior.

an even better, less expensive option is refinishing the stock interior pieces. cost: under $15 for sandpaper and two cans of good spray paint.

also, i could be wrong, but doesn't the water-transfer film eventually peel off? i used to have a sunglasses holder that clipped onto the visor, and eventually the coating started to peel off it. from opening/closing it so much.

Herblenny 08-18-11 08:45 AM

I like it.. Its VERY Mazdaspeed like.

I'm trying to find place local to get this done to my stuff.

Veryspeedy 08-18-11 09:06 AM

there is nothing like the real Carbon, but is a lot more expensive

3M Carbon Fiber finish wrap is the way to go if you really want that style:

edit: oops didn't mean to bump this thread. lol

cohbra 11-30-11 09:05 PM

Well, now that you did, here's my 3M CF wrap for reference if anyone cares to see more pics of it in a 3rd gen.

carolinacat 11-30-11 10:44 PM

I like...looks good you put it on your self? I was gonna buy the real deal from the hard working chinese people and wait for 3months to get something that probally dosent fit real well. but im glad i saw this.

cohbra 11-30-11 10:55 PM

Yeah, I did it myself. It can be a lot of work to get it right though. There's more details of it in my build thread if you want to check it out.

I need to correct what I said earlier though, this is not a 3M product (as far as I know). This is a fabric that is very stretchy making it easier to install. I got it from pyspeed.com

http://www.pyspeed.com/product-p/rd-8001.htm

Tuesday 12-01-11 10:27 AM

Does anyone know what the scratch resistance of this process is? I think it would be neat if I could get my panels done in a plain semi-gloss black (similar to 93 panels). I recently re-painted them, but if this stuff will hold up better to scratching/everyday use, It would be wise to go this route.

MazdaSpeedDan 12-01-11 02:29 PM

Nice, im looking for a set of carbon fiber dash set or some good overlay.

Gringo Grande 12-01-11 02:54 PM

I'm a ricer. I like the dip.
