car wont go into gear..read on

I was @ the drag strip when the car will not go into gear after putting into reverse. I had probably about 5-8 runs @ the drag strip, and finally got down to the 12s and was very pleased. The car was still running, and when I put into reverse, the tranny was not engaging. I had probably missed a few gears about a few times during my runs, but didnt not do any grinding. I tried putting it into any other gears but no luck. I put the car on jacks and looked into the sevice hole and tried the to press on the clutch and everything seems to be worknig fine, but I could be wrong as it was getting dark. I put my hand into the side hole and to feel for the clutch fork, and it seems to have less play than normal, it was only moving by about 1" at the most when the clutch was out and I thought it was a little strange. It has a 8.5 lb flywheel and an act clutch and pressure plate, the clutch fork was reusused along with the old wedge collar and wire ( I should have replaced both when I had the old motor out) Anywho, I hope I have snapped the clutch release fork, but any advise is needed and appreciated. what about a blown tranny? TIA

pull the shifter out and inspect the bushings, the shifter itself and the shifter bore for damage or worn/missing parts.

Thanks, I already pulled the shifter out and unbolt the 4 bolts attached to the top of the tranny, the bushing seems ok, and when I manually move the rod into 1st gear position and start the car, it cranks, however, when I release the clutch, nothing is grabbing, and the car is still in nutral even though I am sure it is in 1st gear position. So I am suspecting my wedge collar snapped out and the ring, but would that explain why my car wont go into any gear? or even the revese tail light is on eventhough it is not in reverse?

Do you feel the shifter move around and click into gear? If so, the tranny is probably fine.

Remove the inspection plate on the bottom-passenger side of the tranny. Look inside with a flashlight while a helper works the clutch. That should show if there is a problem with the wedge collar/ring/fork.

i got money on a broken clutch fork. i bet it shifts fine while the car is not running, but you can't get it in gear with it running. don't try to get it in gear while running b/c you might tweak a synchro. do a search for some other people who have broken theirs.

Sounds like a pilot bearing to me, same happened to me.

rotorypolo 11-20-05 06:41 PM

Well, I hope it is a broken clutch fork, however, when the car is not running, I could not get it into gear as well. I forgot to mention the car's reverse light was on whenever I start the car. The reverse light will stay on even when the shifter is in neutrol. However, when I remove the shifter and the bearing, I was able to manually move the transmission in 1st and 2nd gear. I am puzzled. The car still would not engage in gear when I start it even when the shifter is in 1st. Anyway, I need to remove the tranny to find out.

I would think if it was the pilot bearing then when in gear and the clutch in the car would try to move when started, and the way he's describing it that isn't the case I would also think the same thing for a broken clutch fork. Either he' not getting it into gear or the main shaft has broken.

good run
did you forget to mention intake in your mods list? Ever get it dynoed?

I have no idea about the problem sorry
sounds like it is in the reverse gear to me and something else is wrong

Thanks, well I couldnt get much traction as my car was wheel hopping really bad in 2nd gear. I put on some NT drag tire, and it hooks up just fine. I hope the wheel hopping didnt break something bad as I know it is bad for tranny and drive shaft. Surgemonster, I dont have an intake that will fit the M2 medium intercooler, just the K& N cone filter, probably sucking hot air in really bad. I dynoed my car a couple weeks bad, 350 rwhp/ 282 tq @ 14psi. I trapped @ 110 @ 12.89 with a 2.1 60 ft. Not bad, however, I was a little disappointed as my last run w/ my old motor and setup with only 265 rwhp, I was able to trap 109 mph 2.1 60 ft and run a 13.2. So I was hopping my trap would be much highter with around 80 hp difference. Oh well. i need to get the tranny off.
