Car starting trouble =/

I've been having trouble with starting my 94 FD. i pulled the starter and had it tested, it passed. what else could it be?!?

BOOSTscoop 09-19-08 08:35 PM

plugs, plug wires. fuel injectors, fuel filter. weak battery, bad fuel.

Corroded battery terminal connections?

What are the symptoms?

o Cranks OK but no start?
o Cranks very slowly or not at all?
o Other?

BOOSTscoop 09-20-08 08:07 AM

I had the corroded terminals once too

 i don't think he'd confuse a problem with the starter for compression... sounds like the thing isn't engaging or spinning.

Test the wires at the ignition, battery terminals, engine bay relay and fuse box, and make sure the relay wire is connected to the starter correctly. That's really EVERYTHING it could be if the starter itself is good.

when it turn the ignition, i first hear a click. then when i go to start it, it i doesn't do anything =/ i can push start tho. wheres the starter relay located?!?

Could also be the ignition switch itself. The internals get dirty and result in symptoms like yours. There are several threads around on removing, disassembling, and cleaning the ignition switch - one that I remember seeing was started by Dale Clark.

Also, the clutch switch can act up (doesn't signal that the clutch is depressed) - there are also several threads on this.

First determine if the starter solenoid is actually getting power.

The ignition switch can cause intermittent starting issues but usually doesnt completely fail. My guess is either the clutch switch or the security relay in the kick panel. (which can be easily bypassed)

If you are getting voltage at the starter solenoid then you might need to boost the signal going to it. here are some pics that should help. Sorry dont have any of the clutch switch.

pic of security relay bypassed. Run jumper wire between 2 heavy gauge blue wires.http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...age089-1-1.jpg
Starter booster usually for the click click click start issues. Can be made for about $10

make a list of all the stuff weve said. and just start running through it all. process of elimination-

Worddd! i if i bypass clutch switch or the security relay in the kick panel would i still need to get the pettit starter booster?!?

BTW I'm selling my DD https://www.rx7club.com/non-rotary-automobiles-parts-188/wtt-my-ae86-s5-rx7-773476/

does anybody have a write up on how to clean, or replace the clutch switch?

Obie2kenobe 11-02-08 08:38 PM

if you search for it then you will find it...I might post the link up if I get around to it.

1985GSL 11-02-08 09:49 PM

start off by seeing the thread that is currently below this one and if you go through those couple easy voltage check it will narrow it down and i can help pinpoint it if you need it.

rx7plus8 11-03-08 12:24 AM

well the starters good. i had it tested. are there any threads on how to bypass the clutch safety switch?
