Rx-8 Compatible with Rx-7??????

Hey guys I am sorta new to the Rx7 and 8 deal, but I am already in love with the FD3's. I heard a rumor that the rx-8 6 speed transmission was possibly interchangable with the rx-7 5 speed. Is this True? is it not? and if it is True how so!

please get back with me cuz I am very interested in yalls comments.
thanks.

Clay

i'm not sure if it's just a stright fit. but i suspect the ratios wouldn't be well suited to the FD turbo motor. Plus gearbox strength may become an issue

If there was a way to add a sixth gear for cruising to our 5-speeds, that might not be too bad. Add a few mpg in the process. Unfortunately, when it comes to transmissions, I'm still in the dark.

A six speed is used for those who sish to have better fuel economy while doing 80+ mph. think of it as overdrive for the manual gearbox. Plus it gives you that once extra gear you wished you had when you raced that lil punk from down the way

this can be either wrong or right

with a 5 speed and "longer" gears you wont redline any faster than someone with a 6 speed.

It all boils down to gear ratios.

I would say in keeping the same gear ratios, a 6th gear would only provide better fuel efficiency on the highway. I don't know anyone on here who has ever redlined 5th gear.

agreed.

That 6 speed greddy is sweet, if not to run you bankrupt.

6th is not put in for racing purposes, only fuel economy and marketing.

The FD is drag limited at high speed, and so you'll never even top out 5th gear.

This is covered some in the FAQ: https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/faq-3rd-gen-other-useful-links-68640/
