i have a compustar alarm..nothing but good reviews on that
i used to have a clifford rsx 3.5 it has garbage reception for a pager alarm.
but then again i never got to install the compustar
did you have to have it installed at a specialty shop? most dei authorized dealers wont even touch the compustar alarm.

yep, like Phil said you can get Clifford Matrix 3. Two way pager you can get lojack and is the best quality. VIper and those other alarms are made by the same company. all interchangeable accesories.

There's not as many choices as there used to be. Kenwood and Apline were very good back in the day. I had an Alpine with dual zone radar and different sensor then shock to prevent false alarms and no gay musical siren. There is only DEI and Audiovox now. Some things you can do is have the brain in a different spot, add piazo horns inside and even the main horn inside, clean/hidden wiring (tucked away, zipped tied, covered). The accessories are luxarys, forget the pager unless your exited about runnign to the space with only your cars broken glass left. Hidden stereo equipment, low profile (non flashy outside), like hooking up a changer to the stock radio instead of replacing the head unit. Parking in garages, paying for valet and lojack or similar theft recovery system.

How difficult is it to install an alarm yourself? And typically, how much would buying an alarm for self install cost?

I just had an audiovox/prestige alarm. Keyless entry w/ remote start. I didn't really buy it to have an alarm. If a theif wanted my car bad enough I doubt a stupid alarm would stop him =/

Shawn, its a thieft recovery system. Once activated, police is supposed to know where your car is. The installer hides it somewhere and not even the owner knows where it is.. I guess its worth it.

To be honest, my matrix 3 and 3.5 are for convience. I have it on my Legend Coupe and two of my 7s. My blk FD, I have the window function, door locks, remote start, turbo timer, and few other options. One cool thing about matrix 3.5 is that you could set it to start every 3 hours for 10 minutes to charge the battery (I think 10 minutes??). Great if you are out of town for extended period of time and want to keep the battery alive.

The remote start works great and has pretty good range (make sure its not in gear! I acturally had it in gear and it wasn't fun). Remotes are pretty cool also. I could program one remote to work with all three cars.

The built in turbo timer is great in that unlike turbo timers for FD's, you could acturally set the alarm for the car while you are away. I believe preset were, 1 min, 3min and 10 minutes.

I especially love it on my daily.. Before I leave for work, turn it on and my car is warm and my seats are warm (seat warmers). Definitely worth every penny I spent on it!

Yeah, tell me about it. I let my friend drive my car up to McDonalds with me because he wouldnt stop begging so I figured wtf it was like a 3 min drive. Well when we got there he parked the car in gear... I thought I said not to but whatever. It's kinda cold outside so after eating I go to remote start my car.. then I watch my car drive into the curb, rashing the hell out of my 99 spec lip.

I guess I should have installed a neutral switch or something.. my own stupid mistake.

And that's going to stop someone from loading it up on a trailer?

Alarms only stop the casual theif. Any real thief is going to get your car no matter what is disabled, alarmed or what. You guys should search for a stolen car thread by "RotaryKnight". He owned the white HKS/KnightSports FD which was in the original F&F movie. He had 2 alarms and the club on it and it was still stolen.

The car was found stripped and both alarms with the club sitting in the driver's side floorboard.

Not to mention, the car was stolen from the studio where they were filming, if I recall correctly. It was so long ago though

Well Nothing is gonna stop a REAL car theif but some thing as I mentioned will prevent an amateur. However, an alarm doesn't even prevent an amateur.

I have yet to park my car at a club, outside or anytime that I am not near by. At my house I have my dog (makes noise when he sees anything) so thats my alarm and if there is something I would not hesitate to shoot someone even if it risks damaging my car. I think it's worth it because even if someone steals my car I will not be able to buy another one like it in Canada.

Anyways got and LA-FRE1 made by same Belgian company that makes M16 for the U.S.

Yeah FD owners have got to be the most paranoid people in the world. Your scared of everything inside and out of the car.

Ok, so LoJack is worth it even if most alarms arent? Anyone know what the cost on average is to install/maintain?

Yes, I do a agree with that for the most part. I would say that it's not 'all' FD owners though who are "scared". Me? I don't want my car stolen; but if the factory system doesn't keep it there, it's up to the insurance company after that.

I completely agree thats why I have a little sticker on my window that reads "this car is protected by and electronic anti theft device" but I am 20 so if the car gets stolen yes I get 20,000$ and 4,000$ to replace car and rims however, after that what do you think my insurance premiums will look like?

Fully agreed! Common sense is the best alarm...don't run flashy stereos or leave audio equipment visible. Don't park in bad areas. If the thief is good enough to defeat the stock alarm, it doesn't really matter what you have installed....

An insurance company can't raise your premiums for comprehensive claims. Again, installing some fancy mega-buck alarm isn't going to stop a dedicated thief.
