Cant pass MA emissions HELP!!!

Hi everyone I recently bought an FD and was not able to pass emissions on it. it has High HC and High Co. anyone wanna shed some light on this?

I am running stock boost with a HKS Super Mega Flow Reloaded Intake, Fluidyne Rad, Greddy Cat back and HKS BOV.

Do you still have an air pump?

BillM 06-21-07 10:28 AM

you can do a search for this. there are many posts about it - things like getting the engine hot before inspection, changing plugs, making sure the fuel tank canister purge solenoid is working, etc

AND making sure the cat(s) are in good shape...

Get an electric air pump from a 98+ corvette (ebay), wire it to an on/off switch and plumb it to the cat, when you get ready to test turn on the air pump...

Cost $15 on wiring (wires, switch, relay), $80~120 on the electric air pump also referred to as an electric smog pump.

First off, do you currently have an airpump? If so, just verify if it's working properly before blinding buying stuff.

Next, you need to verify that your catalytic converter is actually doing something. Also, proper maintenance wouldn't hurt if it hasn't been done in a while:

* New spark plugs
* New O2 sensor

or you can go to certain people for smog coffin*

well i believe I stillhave the air pump if someone could post a pic would be great. I did switch out the spark plugs but didnt get a chance to check the o2 sensors and cat yet. I'm going to get it check out at symnatic3 in NH next wednesday.

Emmisions waiver? I sincerely doubt MA will ever offer anything like that.

And not testing OBDI cars anymore...If only it were that easy in MA... You've got it good in IL.

Hey, i live 30 mins north of Boston. it is my understanding that starting in 2008, they will not be testing pre 95 cars for emissions anymore, just visual checks. They are getting rid of the dynos and using OBD2 to test emissions. So if you have a 93, you should be good for this year (emissions is every other year) and then starting next year, no more emissions.

Really? Where have you heard this? That would be great news! More reason for me to buy another FD.

ok so the hose is suppose to connect from the intake to the airpump? my hose is just going from the air pump to no where.

There should be a hose going to the air cleaner box (if it still has stock box) and then hose leading away from the airpump routed down to the catalytic converter. Did you even look to see if you have a cat? Catalytic conv are only good for about 5 years before they get fouled. Previous owner may have removed the cat. Best advice is to take it to a mechanic that knows FD's and have them look at it. They can "pre inspect" it on their diagnostic equipment and see what your problem is. Just don't let 'em start selling you all kinds of stuff you may not need.

zerox678 06-22-07 05:17 PM

thanks chemicool... yea i have a cat but i think its older then 5 years. and no i dont have the air box anymore. i have a hks super mega flow reloaded.

and yes I have schedule an appointment with symnaptic3. anyone know anything about them?

This will prove that MA will offer a waiver...which will in fact prove you wrong
