Can't boost past 5 psi
 

Ok after having some serious boost gauge issues, I installed a mechanical one and finally got the correct readings. I vacuum at 18, but can only boost to 5 psi. After I hit 5 psi, I can't maintain it, it slowly goes back down. It can struggle and hit 6 psi, but no higher and it still falls back down. The car still runs extremely rich. Could this be a problem with my turbos or is it more than likely my wastegate? And the richness problem, I want to check to see the size of my injectors, is there somewhere online that gives a how-to on where to find them and taking them out? I bought the car with mods already on it, so I'm trying to figure out what exactly the person before me did. I'm guessing too big injectors on a stock ECU could cause my richness. But what else could it be?

5 psi sounds like a wide open wastegate.

Close it small intervals at a time. Clogged cat possible?

I got downpipe, midpipe, and full exhaust so no cats. What do you mean by "close it small intervals at a time?" How do you do that? And yes, sequential

Close the manual boost controller so it can start closing the waste gate. If the boost controller is completely open then thats your problem right there.

Do you know of a thread or site that explains how to do that? Thanks so much for your help!

Edit: Actually I know I don't have an aftermarket boost controller, do I have a stock one? I know I sound like a dumbass, but I'm new to rotaries and FDs and I'm trying to learn

Do you hear any loud wooshing sounds when under boost (or trying to be under boost)? Your symptoms seem consistent with a large boost leak like you get if the piping between the turbos and intercooler or possibly any couplers in that piping have split or otherwise sprung a leak. This may not be immediately apparent when you look at them on the car with no boost.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but with open exhaust and a stock wastegate (I'm assuming there's been no porting) I doubt it can flow enough to keep boost that low and then to actually see it drop. Shouldn't it be creeping up in that situation?

I had the same problem and was told by members of this group to check the coupling at the top of the Y-pipe.

Sure enough the coupling was slit and opened up at 5psi. You can't tell by looking at it. You have to remove it and strech it .

I agree, I looked at mine with everything off and thought it was perfect, then took it off to strecth it and bam nice split down the back.



Can you take a picture of this "manual" boost controller as you say? There is no "stock" boost controller the stock system uses pills in the lines to restrcit the vacuum enough to get the desired boost pattern, yet once you get a full through exhaust you HAVE to get a boost controller if not you will over boost and the danger of blowing your engine.

I checked the Y-pipe and it looks fine, took it off and stretched it. None of the hose clamps were really tightened that much though. I tightened them back, but no real difference. Any other thoughts/suggestions for me to check?

IC hoses...they will split down the seam, very hard to see. Squezze them.

If you can't get 10 PSI on the primary, then you most likely either have a restriction on the exhaust side or a leak on the front side.

It could be a vacuum misrouting or a turbo problem, but unfortunately you are going to have to start narrowing things down one at a time.

Well if the whole intake system is fine and the she has straigh through exhaust. Then Im guessing its the aftermarket boost controller shes talking about. BigBoosting take a pic and show us what it looks like to be sure it is one. Maybe they opened it up to be safe for w/e reason.
