Can Cosmo 13B-RE work in a 3rd Gen

Does anyone know specifically whether a 13B-RE from a Cosmo will work in a 3rd Generation engine? What specifically has to be changed? What if I get the engine, harness, and Computer complete? I understand the intake ports are larger, how does this affect intake bolt-up? I hear the engine mounts are different, what needs changed to modify it to fit properly in the 3rd generation. Anybody do this yet??

Please answer and be as specific as possible. I can get a Cosmo 13B-RE with a 1 year warranty very reasonable compared to a REMAN Mazda.

Thanks,
Tim

Well, a cosmo engine will be more expensive then a jspe 13B-REW from a jspec 3rd gen.. This is what you should be looking for.. A Cosmo 13B will work. but the engine monts i believe are different.

I am sure if you striped it down to the block and added all your 3rd gen stuff onto it the engine mount would be the only problem..

I would not waste my time doing this if i were you though.. Either get a reman or a jspec 13B-REW from a 3rd gen..

I see jspec 13BTTs for a 3rd gen go for ~$1400 all the time.. just do some searching around...

It would be alot less work then changeing everyting & spending $400 to have custom engine mounts made..

I have been searching and only found that nobody has one in stock. They are asking $2000-2600 if they can get them. I can get a reman from Mazda for $2000. There is a place in Canada that has rebuilds for $1625 with current currency conversion. I can get a cosmo engine for about $1200 and they are in stock and easily restocked.

I have heard conflicting reports. It will fit, it will not fit. I know that all Cosmos were Automatics. This is not a problem since my car is an Automatic. I know for a fact that the intakes are about 20% larger than the stock 13BT-REW and the turbos are slightly smaller for the A/T to spool up quicker.

My question still remains: Did anyone do the conversion?? I would do this if I know that the engine core will mount with the tranny, starter, and motor mounts properly.

I am wondering if the different motor mounts are directed towards the 5 speed motors? Even with some minor modifications, I still can be saving several hundred dollars compared to the reman engines.

yes it will, my friends who have a shop built a 1st gen race car with a cosmo 13b in it, fit fine.

I know that I could make it fit, but I am looking more specific to the 3rd generation model. I am looking for an answer to a straight forward swap of the engine block. Is it possible without modifications? Do I need to change anything over from my engine? I would be planning on changing the intake, but possibly leaving the Cosmo Turbos and exhaust manifold if I could.

Please help. Anyone who might have access to microfiche parts for the Cosmo would also help.

these cosmo motors are new for $1200?
I'd rather go with a rebuild and get it ported etc

the cosmo 13b would be nice cause the big intake ports
however
let me know what you find out
im curious to know as well

It is a J-Spec Used motor, not a new one with 20K-30K miles. They are readily available, but I found one for $1200. Everyone I talked to had a Cosmo motor in stock, but said they almost never get a J-Spec Twinturbo RX7 motor. I have even asked to be put on a list and they stopped that since they get so many requests and so few motors for most of the places I have contacted.

If I could get a J-spec RX7 engine for around $1400, I probably would go that route, but cannot find one anywere yet.

Zach,

Where can I get a J-Spec 13BT-REW for around 1400?? Email me at mccreary@cove.net if you have a place.

I called 6 different places and these were the prices:
$1795+250 ship startup warranty
$2527+44 ship 30 days warranty
$1875+175 ship Startup warranty
$2295+85 ship 30 day warranty
$2150+75 ship startup warranty
$2500+100ship 6 month/12K mile warranty

I can get a reman for $2000 with a 1 year warranty from local mazda dealer (brother works there, his price)

The Cosmo intake manifold has significantly larger ports than a FD's. Bryan at Rotorsports Racing had one when I was out there last, and he said it "should" bolt up fairly easily to an FD 13b. With ported intake and exhaust ports on a FD engine, it would probably be better than a stock Cosmo 13b.
