C-West sleek lights on a stock front end??

R Xplicit 09-29-01 02:18 PM

Eddie,

The real important question is: is the lighting
pattern better than stock with equal wattage bulbs?

Montego 09-29-01 07:47 PM

Eddie,

Did you change bulbs? if so what kind? Are you happy? I want the c-west lights but i've heard the lighting really sucks.

evot23 09-29-01 07:55 PM

Ok, heres the thing...the C-west kit uses CATZ fog lamps.

The output is brighter than stock BUT because of the angle of the cover and they way you have to situate them to fit the lights on the distance is worse.

The highs shoot a bluish light that is wide but not very illuminating...I'd say better than stock though.

The lows are brighter but only illuminate the width of the car for about 8-10 feet.

I have them mainly for the look...thought about getting driving lamps like the stock FD tourings so that I have a beam that shoots farther.

evot23 09-29-01 07:57 PM

Oh yeah, if you look at the pics carefully you will notice that the lights "bubble" above the hood line. Some don't like this because it "ruins" the lines of the car.

If you want the lights to be truly flush, get the RE kit...their lighting is worse than the C-west though.

Mpressiv 09-29-01 08:48 PM

Whats the cheapest price anyones seen of the sleek headlights? Either C-WEST, or RE i dont care which. im just thinking about options. i'd really like a sleek kit i think but im not really feeling spending $1200. Thanks

how is the housing sealed? Is there anyway you could open up the light housing? I don't like the carbon fiber housings, otherwise the light kit is cool.

As you can see from the pics (wish there was an easier way to post) there are essentially 4 main pieces.

Base
Carbon fiber top
Plastic light cover
Lights

That's it for about 1200+bucks.:(

The plastic cover is the only thing protecting the lights. Luckily a hard rock hasn't hit the covers on the highway....replacing them is a pain in terms of money and finding a source.

For the die hards it weighs in at about 2-2.5 lbs. Stock lights weigh in at 5.

See i was thinking of getting the c-west kit with the apexi front bumper. In order that I could have extra lighting with those big ass bumper lights that fit on there.

Zoomspeed 09-29-01 11:02 PM

Is there any way to make them sit flush? Is if the hole thing that makes it stick up or is it just the clear cover part that "bubbles" over the body lines? Has anyone ever tried to change out the lights to get better lighting? I've been told that BMW lights each have their own individule housings. I'm sure if they're small enough they can be fabricated in. Just not by me. :D

evot23 09-29-01 11:08 PM

the plastic cover forms the bump over the hood but only because the lights are situated on the mounts. The kit is fabricated that way so getting them flush would require

1. lowering where the lights sit
2. pushing lights further back

At that point you'd be better off just getting the RE kit or fabricating your own. Someone on the thread posted their light fabrication somewhere..

I've got the C-West lights on a stock front also.

I actually LIKE what they do to the lines of the car. I was worried about it, because I like the smooth stock line and triple bulge thing, but, once the light were on the car, all they did was enhance that for me.

And they definately wake the car up. It's not like our cars look old, or anything. I can't imagine when the FD will start to show its age. But these lights make it look even newer.

I can't tell you how many compliments I've gotten about the lights.

Oh, and, the light pattern isn't that great, but the quality of light is definately better than stock. They're much brighter. Then again, I had the original headlights before. Factory bulbs still, so, it wasn't the greatest to begin with.

I was worried about sealing and fogging, also. We just had a real wet spell here in Texas, and the lights only had a small minor little tinge of condensation on one corner. Maybe it's because they're so open air, moisture doesn't get a chance to hang around long. I'm sure I'll find out more this winter.

I dig them.

evot23 09-30-01 07:43 AM

Goblin,

What color is your FD? Post a pic if you can.

R Xplicit 09-30-01 09:18 AM

i also have the kit, and it is paired with a set of piaa fog lamps. i get plenty of lighting on the street with them, and without, it is a little dull, but still looks good nonetheless. i like the way they look and judging by the way the re's look in a car, you asking for lighting nightmares with them, cause half of the light is sunken in lower than the front end.....to each his own....

My car is vintage red, same as the other car already posted. I've got pics, but they're all hard copy, nothing digital. Sorry.

Great looking car.

Just curious, what type of driving lamps are you talking about? The PIAA off-road type? I too am completely disappointed in the lighting ability of the stocks and wanted to get some boost from the lamps you're speaking about. Since they draw a lot more juice from the battery, how hard is it to replace all the wiring necessary?
