/bye bye motor

Pretty certain I woofed my motor tonight :( I was pulling on some F Body and afterwards had problems.

These past few weeks my idle has been screwy, bouncing between 5-800 all the time at idle, with vacuum bouncing between 8-12 Hg. After the F Body race I shut it off for a while, then tried starting it maybe 30 minutes later. It dies about 2 seconds after idle, and only has about 8 Hg vacuum and the idle bouncing all over again. I am seeing some black smoke on startup which leads me to believe a compression problem.

I did check my map sensor and it's tight so that's not the problem. I also just changed my plugs 2 weeks (less then 200 miles ago) to NGK 9's all the way around.

The motor has 51k miles on it. Almost exactly a year ago I had a compression test and it was 1st rotor 8.3, 8.3, 8.3. Second 7.9, 7.9, 7.7. Since then I have driven about 5k miles, and added a Catback, Midpipe, FMIC, Nippendenso Fuel Pump, Pulley Kit, boost controller, removed Airpump and a remapped Rotary Performance ECU. I run 12 PSI daily and keep my silencer in my exhaust to control my boost creep. I suppose these mods are a contributing factor.

Guess I will take it into Mazda tomorrow for a compression check, but my gut feeling is a bad seal. Any ideas before I take it for it's compression check? Hopefully I can squeeze some blood money from the warranty company.

Sound like what I just did. Get a compression check.

I too will keep my fingers crossed for ya Bryan. I know I was chasing after that damn Camaro all night too, glad you got to take him out, even with the problems. He just wouldnt race me for some damn reason, oh well. It was a fun night of cruising, keep me posted on what happens and let me know if I can help in any way, later man and keep your chin up.

Put car back to stock before the warranty co. sees it...

Scrapiron7 04-02-03 07:46 AM

Thanks Steve. I have a compression test scheduled for 10:30am this morning so I should know the results by noon. As far as putting it back to stock, that's not even a possibility since I don't have the parts. The warranty company never sent a rep to see my car when I got the warranty, and they also said I can take it to any shop of my choice without usually sending someone to see it.

I certainly don't plan to have Mazda do any work other than the compression test. Most likely it will get towed into A-Spec in Chicago.

Well your getting the compression test right now if its 10:30 am test.

Results

Got my results today.

Front Rotor: 8.2, 8.3, 8.3
Rear Rotor: 5.8, 6.6, 7.4

Seeing these numbers I guess I can still probably drive on it for a while. I guess my plan will be to get a street port. Now I get the fun of dealing with the warranty company :D

ouch...did you have a ported wastegate?

RollnDrty 04-02-03 08:50 PM

Hey man im sorry to here the news... i jsut popped mine too, with 53k on the original engine. Ya get that car back to stock b4 doing anything, my warranty co is giving me the run around, asking for all service records, etc. get all your records together, and then make the claim. Im gonna be getting a small-medium streetport, hopefully the warranty co gives me the go ahead on the new engine that way i dont have to pay for the whole thing. good luck man...

No I didn't. I used my boost controller and silencer to maintain constant 12 PSI. I never went above that even once so I don't think overboost was the issue. However, I will be porting the wastegate during the rebuild so I can get rid of that pesky silencer :)

I do have every single service record for the past 3 years of owning the vehicle, so that's not an issue. I cannot put the car back to stock however, for the lack of the parts I would need to do so. I am hoping that they will not need to send an inspector as they said they usually wouldn't when I got the warranty.

did you figure out why it detonated?
