Buying rx7 as first car
 

Hey,
I have been researching, reading up, and yes even using the search engine on this page to find all I can on the Rx-7 and just had a few questions left over.
Since the Rx-8 is coming out soon with a rotary engine will it make finding parts and labor for the rx-7 cheaper? Also, in general would the rx-7 make a good first car? I have been driving a Grand Prix Sedan for a little while now and would consider this, if I got it, my true first sports car. I have read on this forum that it might not posibly be the best because of the power behind the rotary being too much for a newer rx-7 driver. On ebaymotors and autotrader I have been finding rx-7's ranging in price from $6k - 40k and mileage all the way up into the 120's. What exactly should I be looking for in these cars besides that they have gotten regular maintenance and were checked for the problems in those 3 recalls of the rx-7s?

I know you said you've searched, but there is atleast one of these types of posts every day. No, an FD is not a good first car. An inexperienced driver should not be learning to drive with a very powerful rear wheel drive car. This car takes a serious committment to maintain and keep in good working condition. The nearest respected tuner to you is Rotary Performance in Garland, Texas (over 200 miles). Mazda dealers do not know how to fix these cars and that will not change with the RX-8 coming out. Nor will parts or labor be cheaper.

Do yourself a favor and learn to drive on a nice front wheel drive. Get some experience so you actually know how to drive and lose some of that "I am immortal" feeling that almost all teenagers have.

Also, if you really want an RX-7, get an FC (second gen, 1986-1991). They are still fast and will be much cheaper.
