Ok, my FC bit the dust, and I'm now in negotiations w/ a gentleman over a 93 FD, Touring package, manuel.

I don't have a toootal noob question, but need a spot of advice from the Gurus!

The car has about 60k on it, body is cherry, interior is good, however... the engine bay is filthy w/ oil and such. Also, under boost, I believe when the Secondary Turbo begins to spool, OIL!! THERE SHE BLOW!!! And then after letting off the gas, EVEN MORE OIL!!!

Now, the neat thing is, the owner is willing to take the price of fixing the problem into consideration and taking it off the price of the car. The AC doesn't work, and w/ those problems, what would be the price of having the engine and turbos taken care of, and installed, either rebuilt or new. Thank you very much for your time on this guys, it truly means alot. :)

Sounds like trouble. I looked at many FDs and stayed away from the ones you just described. A lot of original engines never made it past 60k miles. If they did it was with an owner that was probably pretty meticulous about maintenance. If the motor is covered in oil and the turbos are pissing oil, it doesn't sound like he maintained it pretty well. If he is willing to take the cost of the problems into consideration, have it looked at by a rotary specialist in your area and take that cost off the price. Do a compression check to make sure the motor still has somelife in it too.

It sounds like the stock twins need to be rebuilt. I don't know what this costs (I'm thinking $1000 plus labor). Call a couple rotary places and get a quote.

personally, I would stay away from FD's like those... you never know, there could be more problems then you think. I agree with, alberto mg, get a compression test and then go from there.

And also, the transmission is in fantastic shape, all the synchros feel good and the clutch feels very solid, but if I can get the guy to cut a deal so I can get motor work done, where in so. cali would I need to go or call? thanx

thnx man, I actually just moved down here and the FC died, so I figued i'd upgrade....

Really depends on what he wants for the car. It can be as relatively simple as a faulty PCV system, to bad turbos that are barfing oil, to bad oil seals in the motor.

If this is to be your new, only car, it might be worth thinking about that some. It's very possible the car will need to be down for a while to repair whatever ailments it has. You also have to be ready to put a motor in the car if it comes to that, which is a fair sized investment. The motor itself isn't too pricey, but all the other crap you need to deal with while swapping the motor in will add up.

Again, there's no guarantee that the motor is the problem with the car. You have to be prepared for whatever the outcome may be.

Are you familiar with working on rotaries? Depending on the asking price of the car, id shy away from one having problems to start with. If you can get a quote of repair from someone knowledgible go from there..

Engine R&R = $1000-1500
Engine rebuild = Min. $2K
Various hoses, nuts, bolts, etc. that needs to be replaced = $500
Turbos = $300-1500 (used ones on the forum or rebuilt ones)

I would knock off that much off the asking price...minimum.

Expect the worse. Like Alberto_MG said, do a compression check first. It will let you know the overall condition of the vehicle.

Just remember:
New Housings = $500 /each
New side housings = $350-500 /each
Rotors = $450 /each
All new apex seals, springs, oil control rings, etc. = $500

These are at dealer cost. Retail cost is going to be double that.

Yeah, so we got the estimate from the Dealership.. hehehehehe for the cost of fixing the engine and getting the ol' girl back up to snuff......

lol, so now, that he believes me that dealerships SCREW WITH YOU, I can probably get him to go for the shop out my way..... BOO YA!
