Break it in???
 

Just got my car back today from a reman install. How long of a breaking period should i give the engine?? And should I install my pettit ECU right away, or after the break in.?

as long as the ecu is flashed for your mods, i would put it in. i broke my car in for like 1300 miles. no boost at all. have fun :P its actually kinda hard to drive not being in boost.

You could use the Pettit ECU during break-in if you like. The control needs to come from your right foot, not the ECU.

I would at least do about 4-500 miles for the break-in.

There are plenty of detailed write ups if you would just take 2 seconds to search. You dont seriously think in all the years this forum has been up that nobody in the years previous has asked about a rebuild breakin? Give me a break.

Typically, one follows the recommendations of the builder....but feel free to search using the term "break-in". You can use my username to limit the results to the right answer... ;)

The best place to ask the question, is to the people that installed the engine. If you ask here, you will get a wide variety of answers ........ then you have to guess who to listen to ;)

i did 1500 before boost and only 5000 rpm to date, just past 2000 and break in period. time to do the meth! and 25psi

yea drove my car boost less for 700miles then added a lil for the next 400 but never got on it hard. longest 1100miles of my life.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with giving the motor some boost......I'd say take it easy for a couple of hundred miles, but seeing 5-7 psi for the first 500 miles won't hurt a thing.

I totally agree. Generally the builder will define the run in period and with it the terms of the warranty. Popular opinion may state that 1000 - 1500 miles is sufficient a run in period, but if your builder requests 2000 miles to meet the warranty then that,s what you do.......or the warranty may be invalid. Sort or thing you need to find out before you give you motor to anybody.
If you havn't got a warranty then boost her out the workshop :)

It also depends on if the engine has new bearings or not. For a fresh rebuild, with new bearings, this is what Ihor and I stipulate to retain the warranty on our ported or stock port motors:

first 500 miles, revs less than 4k, minimal boost
change oil with motor oil
next 1000 miles, revs less than 6k, boost less than approx 0.5 bar (7ish psi)
change oil with synthetic

The reason why we state 'minimal boost' for the first 500 miles is a case of, better safe than sorry. People that don't boost at all for 2000 miles and longer are being overly cautious to the extreme.
