BOV relocation question
 

First off- Did a search, now that thats out of the way....
On the Pettit Coolcharge III intercooler they have in their picture the BOV is located on the Greddy Elbow. Im about to upgrade my intercooler to the Pettit SMIC, and this is what i want to do. There installation instructions say nothing about BOV relocation. What do you have to do to take the stock BOV and replace it onto the greddy elbow with a Greddy RS bov?

it looks like they are expecting you to already have the Greddy elbow with a BOV flange welded onto it.

which pettit SMIC are you looking at? they make three ircc... cool charge, cool charge II, and cool charge III.

the cool charge II uses the stock plastic elbow.

the cool charge II uses the greddy elbow which they sell separately for $178 (with greddy bov flange).

honestly, you're much better making an SMIC yourself and saving $1000. check out my thread here - i made a SMIC setup with the exact specs of the cool charge III for around $500...

Theorie, I have seen your thread and thought of doing this myself. But theres a few problems. One i dont have the tools to do the job, two i suck at welding, 3 if i screw up doing the job which is inevitable than i wasted my time and money. Id rather just spend the chunk o cash on the pettit intercooler. BTW im going with the coolcharge III like in the picture, and I know i have to have the Elbow and BOV I was going to order both from Pettit while i was ordering the intercooler. I Just dont understand relocating the BOV from the engine bay, where its just between some tubing and putting it on the Compression tube itself.

BTW I love your IC setup, thats awesome and If i had the ability to do it, and the skill I would. Wanna make me one? lol

You can purchase the Greddy elbow with a flange already welded for a Greddy BOV. Warning though is that where the flange is welded, you'll basically ONLY be able to fit a Greddy BOV on it. The other thing you need to do is to block off the stock BOV outlet. To do it right, you need to remove the y-pipe and have it welded closed. You can get some rubber stoppers and cover it, but you'll have to make sure they don't get brittle from the heat in the area and begin to cause boost leaks or just pop off completely.

So Block of from the stock y-pipe.... Okay Well i was going to order a efini y-pipe and Pettits charge control valve... So I guess once I ge the new y-pipe I can just have the BOV outlet welded shut and be done with it? Its hard for me to get a grasp on this right now im about 5K miles away from my car and wont be home for another month. But im trying to plan all this out in advance.

And I do plan on using a greddy bov, want to go with the type RS.

Did another search and came accross some threads saying that with the ASP intercooler you have to modify the piping to fit the efini y-pipe and the Pettit is just about the same as the ASP so im guessing the Efini y-pipe probably isnt worth it... especially since i plan on going single in about two years....

Yes, IMO if your sure your going to move to a single turbo, the money for the efini 'Y' pipe would be better spent elsewhere.

what kind of bov do you have now?.. if you have the hks ssq and have the twins, petti sells the Billet BOV which sounds exacally like the hks. i have the cc3 and the billet.

I dont have the BOV yet i was going to get the Greddy type rs. Have a buddy who had it and he loved it. Although im kind of worried about it since im seeing mixed reviews of it here on the forum.

For now im just going to go with that pettit billet bov, that with the stock twins. Im still kinda up in the air about the single turbo/bnrs so i ll just keep my IC piping solid for now. If i decide to go single ill have to remodify the pipe that goes to the turbo any ways so it wont the that big of a hassle to get a bov flange put on it then. And if i decide the bnrs are best ill stay with the billet bov.....

To be honest I wouldn't mount the bov in the intake elbow if I were you. There is a severe lack of space there which makes sticking the bov there more of a hassle then it's worth imo.

I'd pick up a flange for the bov and just weld it on the cold side piping for the IC.


Also, depending on what boost pressure you plan on running you may not need to "upgrade" the bov just yet..

when would you need to upgrade the stock bov's?

My stockers are holding ~15psi with no notable leaking...
But I don't think they are the fastest reacting bovs in the world, so I can't speak for any surging that might occur...

As long as you don't run crazy ammounts of boost and your stockers are in good condition, no 'real' need to upgrade

I've seen them used up to 17 PSI. The main drawback of the stock BOV is the stock spring inside. It closes a later than most aftermarket BOV's. With aftermarket BOV's closing a little earlier, boost builds quicker and the turbos are more responsive. Garfinkle used to offer a service of modifying the stock BOV with a stronger spring to have it closer sooner. I'm not sure if he's still offering that service or not.

So, while people claim there is no benefit to changing out the stock BOV; that's not entirely true.

What direction did you end up going? I am looking at the pettit racing billet BOV and I have ordered the BNRs. Just curious if you like the sound or noticed any difference with the BOV.

Im just going to wait to get my A-Spec tuning gt35R setup, intercooler all at once. So for now im just running the stock bov.
