Bought an RX-8 shift knob...question?

I bought a carbon fiber RX-8 shift knob on ebay for about $10 because it's real carbon fiber, not that sticker fake crap. Anyways, I didn't do much research before hand (impulse purchase) and figured it would fit the 7 because I've seen guys put the illuminated RX-8 knob on the 7. I got it in the mail and it doesn't fit the threads. Does anyone know what the thread pattern is of the 7 and of the 8? How can I go about fixing this problem? I was thinking I could get a tap and dye set and re-thread either the shift rod in the 7 or the new knob? Comments are gladly appreciated. Thanks

Jack

I've got a 5 speed RX8 knob and it's a 1 for 1 fit. I haven't heard of a CF RX8 knob, sounds like a 1 off to me.

Jack is it like this one, your pics aren't coming up

how does it look? in the picture on this auction it doesn't look very good as far as the carbon fiber design. for 10 bucks I would rethread the knob not the shifter. good luck.

the one in that ebay link looks like ass, and also uses an alan key, so is universal, not screw on.

Check that link I just posted above. It is the shifter I have and I love it. For 100 bones you can't go wrong.

I have the 6sp rx8 knob, and I just tell people I have HKS 6sp tranny...j/k* I've never head of CF rx8 knob. I'd say thats probably one off product.

John Magnuson 01-12-05 05:21 PM

I have the RX8 6sp shift knob. The RX8 is a 6 speed. Do they even have a 5 speed? I don't think so. So how could you have a "real" RX8 5 speed shift knob?

If I remember correctly the factory original RX8 6 speed Shift Knob was self threading... meaning that it had a soft plastic interior that you just threaded onto the existing shift lever.

John Magnuson----Yes they do since the shift knobs were made in Japan or Europe, either way we have a 5-speed version too. If your talking about the Ebay one, I can only say the guy put down in the discription thats its a JDM one, whatever thats suppose to mean.

The Ebay knob does look a little cheese....

Yep, I agree. It's possibly the best add-on for your car. The rotary desing is sweet!

John Magnuson 01-12-05 06:10 PM

Oh ok... I didn't know the RX8 could come with a 5 speed transmission. My error.

I have the Rx-8 5-speed lighted shift knob as well. I had Redline Goods stitch a new shift boot with matching thread. It looks good.

Got any pics?

pianoprodigy 01-12-05 08:15 PM

None with the new boot. When I get the car back (hopefully this week), I'll take a picture.

Yes, that is the one I got. I was checking it out a bit more today and thought the same thing...re-thread the shift knob. Thanks, by the way does anybody know the thread pattern of the 7's shifter?

Jack

Does anyyyyybody know?? Thanks

Jesse[SM] 01-14-05 07:43 PM

take your stock one into the hardware store or wheverever you're getting the tap and die set, they'll find the right one. i had to do that with a thermostat housing.

bingoboy 01-14-05 08:08 PM

anyone know the thread pattern on the FD shifter?

GoRacer 01-14-05 08:11 PM

Isn't it 10x1.5? My RAZO instructions are in Japanese, but I know my insert was a 10.

rx7speed811 01-14-05 08:28 PM

when you buy a tap and dye set usually it comes with a thread gauge to measure thread spacing. it usually looks like a miniature swiss army knife with a bunch of of miniature saws that swing out of it. sorry for lack of better explaination, but you should be able to use that to get a good measure of the stock shifter shaft threads. definitely tap out the knob, not the shaft.
