Borla XR-1 vs XR-2?
 

What are the flow and sound differences between the xr-1 sportsmen mufflers and the xr-2 titanium?

It's doubtful that most people have used the XR-1 on this forum, and the XR-2 is too new and too expensive for many people to have tried it either. Ask Borla about the flow differences between the two. As for sound, I'm sure they're relatively similar, since they are not designed to "tune" the sound of the exhaust, but rather to simply drop noise volume. Your cat-back will have more effect on the sound of your exhaust than a Borla in the midpipe will, unless that's your only muffler.

I'm assuming you're considering putting one in your midpipe. I'll be using the XR-2, just because it's light as hell. I'll also have a titanium midpipe, though.

yup thats what I'm planning on doing. While surfing around I just saw the xr-2 and was wondering. I'll probably just go with the Xr1 though since the xr2, even though its very very nice, its just tooo expensive for a muffler. AT least for my applications it is.

Are you getting titianium pipeing too?

I use the the XR-1 on the end of my system.
As Jim has already stated, I use it only to drop the noise level of my exhaust. I've been looking into the XR-2 and using that with custom 4" Ti pipe from the downpipe back.

so does putting the XR-1 in your midpipe quiet the exhaust?
I was thinking of doing this hoping it would flow better then a cat and quiet better also.
My plan is to use both the loud ATR muffler I got on there and the XR-1 in the midpipe.
Is this what some of the others have done to quies things down a bit?

Your answer is yes to both questions :) I've read it knocks it down by 8db... I've heard of the midpipe getting extremely hot in some cases when preforming this mod, is this true for the poor passengers?

The rotary exhaust is always going to be hot, but I never had a problem with my XR-1. In fact, the stainless case never turned "iridescent" as stainless will when heated excessively. Look at a stainless turbo manifold some time. :)

The XR-1 was almost a necessity in my case. Non-sequential is LOUD, and I was tired of the drone of my PFS cat-back. I still didn't like the sound of the PFS, or the "smoot" that is left on the back of the car by the (relatively) slow moving exhaust flow resulting from a large single tip, so I switched to the Racing Beat twin tip, and it's by far my favorite of the 4 exhausts that I owned.

However, even with the RB twin tip and the Borla, in fact even with the stock cat-back and the Borla, the car was still plenty loud at WOT. When I dyno'd it for the last time with a rotary engine, (with both rotors blown, no less) everyone was backing away from my car with their hands over their ears, and eventually went outside the building.

I can't verify the 8 dB drop in sound level, but it does help substantially.

I had 3" exhaust w/ Greddy PE and non-sequential. I had to put on a XR-1 to keep the police from showing @ my door at 1:00 in the morning. It definately took the bite out at idle and highway ... however when you step on it is still very loud.

after converting to non-sequential i couldnt believe how loud it was....VERY drastic change...

Well, no louder than the twin system is above 4,500 rpm, but now it's loud all the time. :)

Would any of you happen to know the sound level difference between the 15" x 5" round xr-1 and the 16" x 4.25" x 7.875" oval xr-1? I assume the oval will be the quiter one, but is the difference significant?
