Borla XR-1 Mufflers

I really need to quiet down my single setup FD. I understand alot of people go with the Borla XR1 mufflers, but how much does it quiet it down? right now im straight 3" dp mp and catback. IT IS LOUD. Would the Xr1 make a significant change in how loud my exhaust is at idle and low rpms. I dont mind it being loud at high rpms because i want it to be loud then.

I was looking at the XR1 and there were different versions of it.

40085:

40944:

40943:

Now since the 40085 is round and not oval would it still quiet down the sound alot more then just the straights? and it is 15" and the 40944 is 16". The 40943 is 12" so would it be louder then the 40085 or 40944?

The larger the muffler the quieter it would be. I have the 16" oval XR1, it needs some custom exhaust work to fit. At idle the sound is fairly deep and understated, but at wot it is still quite load. This is coupled with the Greddy PE catback, I will be switching to the RB duel tip. The new combination should provide even more sound supression to near stock level.

Trexthe3rd - My buddy has the same setup and was wanting to get a Borla. His problem on a mild streetport with stock twins, DP, ResMP, PE is that at idle...it is fuckin loud. Loud enough to get a cop interested. Does the borla calm the idle out of the PE?...the pipe diameter and tip size on that PE make it pretty raspy.

I have the 12" oval sportster. It takes the edge off but diesn't do much to quiet things down. If you want quiet I'd suggest a magnaflow. When I had the RX-7 store midpipe in (magnaflow muffler) it was a good bit quieter than the Borla.

Don't count on it. While your borla may be 4" longer than mine (grrr, there isn't a better way to say that) I have a RB dual tip (and a metal cat in there too). It is a far cry from stock..

Has anyone ever use Random Technologies catalytic converters? http://www.randomtechnology.com/index.html I wonder if they would help suppress noise and they do make them for RX7's or you can get a universal one to fit.

I got the Borla XR-1 40575 welded on my custom 3" MP I made,

It actualy works very well and makes a huge diference in exhaust note., I'd also say that is 20%-25% quieter with it on than before.

I dont know if youre setup makes much of a difference...I'd say our cars are pretty close and i'm running straigt pipes onto an old ass HKS super dragger thats now got a 4.5" hole in it! Before the "air flow improving hole" it was quiet, real quiet! One of the other guys out here has the same exact setup(minus the hole) and I couldnt believe how quiet it was. I mean i thought his FD wasnt running, thats how quiet it was....look into one of those, either that or a racing beat

Interested in a vband mid pipe with resonator? 3.75in vband to a 3in flange has a resinator in the middle and is made by greddy... PMME if interested i'll get you pics..

BobfisH 08-30-05 01:59 AM

i have a stock FD with apexi filters and a racing beat twin exit backbox, and its very very quiet. My old audi was louder....and that had the stock exhaust.

PhatManBUD 08-30-05 11:16 AM

20 to 25% quieter? hmm... sounds good to me. cause right now, at idle and normal driving 1-4k rpm. Everyone tells me i have the loudest car they have ever heard. So would the muffler really help in that rpm range?

ohh man they havent even heard the wastegate open yet. woo!

Hahahha, once the wastegate opens it's like a choper fly-bye. lol...

thats exactly what i want =)

Mr rx-7 tt 08-31-05 02:06 AM

Buy the muffler from the RX7 store. It sounds MUCH better than the Borla XR-1 and flows just as well. It's also direct bolt on.

GUITARJUNKIE28 08-31-05 02:15 AM

i did a rebuild last year on an fd that had the hks hipower exhaust and it was pretty damn quiet.

GoodfellaFD3S 08-31-05 06:30 AM

I have a magnaflow muffler welded into my mp and I am very happy with the noise levels at idle and cruise. At WOT, all hells still breaks loose :bigthumb:

Jdot 08-31-05 07:41 AM

Ok correct me if I'm wrong. From what I remember a muffler wealded in the midpipe will not stop the inside of the car from smelling like gas/oil, however a Hi flow or Metal substrate<--(Spelling) cat will. I toying with the idea of having both "MSC & a muffler" wealded in the midpipe. Has anyone done that? Did you have space issues as far as total length?

alberto_mg 08-31-05 08:45 AM

correct.

maxcooper also did something similar using a round magnaflow.

fyi - the muffler/resonator doesn't need to be in the midpipe. you can also place it behind the midpipe in the pipe between the midpipe and the rear axle.

BlueSprite 08-31-05 12:44 PM

does the muffler/resonator come with the MP, or you weld that into your MP ?

Cuz i might need one too......

M104-AMG 08-31-05 01:38 PM

I did the same thing as Max with a Magnaflow, but I had an air-pipe connector BEFORE the metallic cat welded in, as well as an O2-sensor for wide-band tuning in the future.

Nice and quiet, but still there when you're on it.

:-) neil

maxcooper 08-31-05 01:54 PM

I had a midpipe built (from scratch -- I didn't start with a regular midpipe) that contains both a Random metallic cat (first) and a 5x8" oval, 14" long, 3" offset/center Magnaflow muffler (second). It fits great, is quiet (~5 dB quieter than my hf cat @ 80MPH cruise), and gets rid of the stink. I love it.

Hope you don't mind me chiming in on this...

I have a dp and a hiflo right now... and had a Tanabe G-Power exhaust. I just upgraded to a Racing Beat single tip to see if it would be any more quiet - and it isn't really that much different. So, I think I am going to go back to the Tanabe and consider putting a resonator/muffler somewhere in the mix. And selling the RB.

The piping for the Tanabe is all one piece from the cat-back. I was looking at those links to the Borla 40085... and I'm wondering if that could just be welded into the straight section of the piping. Has anyone done this? Also, if I keep it under 4-4 1/2" OD, will it still clear everything?

Thanks!

PhatManBUD 09-07-05 10:55 AM

I bought the 40944. Would this make my car quiet enough to be streetable so i dont stand out like a full on loud race car on the streets.

A cop pulled me over when i was cruising with my friends and there was a celica with a big wing, a supra with the stock wing and loud exhaust, i was wingless and it still didnt help =\

This is the model I have been looking at. I have no idea why people use the cheap sportsman instead. Do/did you have a streetport? ANy pics of it mounted? :icon_tup:
