boost help
I've read the stickies and I know boost issues are common for these cars, but I was lookin for specific advice on my problem. About a week ago i was only gettin 5psi on my stock turbos (i usually get 8) and now its down to 4. One of my friends suggested that it was a leak and another friend who is decently mechanically inclided said it could be the wastegate actuator having problems. But from my limited knowledge of FD's, arent the wastegates internal? and could they actually cause low boost issues? I just need some advice to get me started in the right direction, thanks.

Yes, the wastegate can cause boost problems. However, the wastegate's lowest setting is 7 PSI. If you are getting something lower but still getting some boost, then that leads to a problem outside of the wastegate.

ok another quick question about my boost problem. I noticed that the troubleshooting site about boost doesnt mention too much about vacuum leaks. Now, added to my low boost of only 4-5 psi, my vacuum stays around 12, and nowhere near the 18-20 like its supposed to be. Is this a vacuum leak? if so where should i start lookin?

What do you need me to do??? :D

Ok now that I got that off my chest. Rami, He might have been thinking about the wastegate actuator. However you would get the opposite problem if that were not working. You would be over boosting.
In all honesty we could post speculations all day but the fact is you or someone is just going to have to get in there and find the leak. Enjoy. |

That is not always the case. If the wastegate is stuck open the car will boost well below 7psi. It usually will build boost extremely slow(much slower than non-seq) and top out around 4-5 psi at the top of the rpm band. At what rpm are you staring to see boost, what rpm is the 4 lbs reached, does it fade away, or stay till redline? |
lol sorry for the confusion guys.
but yeah that kinda sounds like my situation, it gets to around 2-3 really quick, like around 2-3k rpm and slowly reaches 5. i havent taken the car to redline since this started so im not sure how high it goes, but it seems to stop around 5. |
Get under the car and make sure the wastegate actuator is still hooked up and didnt come off the rod. Im pretty sure it is the wastegate from your description, let me know what you find out and I will give you more suggestions from there.

On the link, follow the actuator(wastegate control) from right to left and see where the rod connects to the wastegate. Often times people do not reinstall the C shaped clip to hold the rod onto the wastegate, causing it to fall off over time and resulting in your symptoms. |
thx a lot, ill check that out thursday and let u know what happens. i guess my dads lift will finally come in handy

well i havent had time yet to get under the car, but while driving the other day I noticed that my boost is reaching 5 lbs rather quickly at WOT, so maybe my symptoms arent the same as you are describing. So basically im only getting 12 vacuum and 5 psi of boost max, could this still be the actuator or a leak?
