Boost Controller Write Up(profec type S)
So here my writeup for a boost controller install. Im going to demostrate the installation of my Greddy Profec Type S but this should be fairly universal for all controllers, especially greddy units.
First you should mount everything to understand how it needs to fit together. I mounted my Type S control unit in the AC vent underneat the steering column. If you pop the pipe off the back and force the directional vent out you should be able to remove the directional portion of it leaving you with the perfect bezel for your 1/4 DIN control unit. Slip the bezel over your unit and replace it in the vent. This position provides a great, strudy, low key mounting place. Its in reach in driving and no one knows where it is but you and me. http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/350...ings0030ce.jpg I mounted my stepper motor on the relay rack over by the intake. This is a good place to locate it for those with a stock intake box. If you have an aftermarket intake you shoud(with the help of the stepper motor mounting bracket) have many, many options with leftover bolt holes. I zip tied some 6mm rubber hose(came in the kit) to the relat rack and then ziptied my stepper motor on top of that. Assuming your headlight covers are in good condition this should be a dry, un-hot place to mount it and provides close location to your actuators for vacuum line routing. https://img72.imageshack.us/img72/48...ings0013qm.jpg https://img72.imageshack.us/img72/74...ings0024fu.jpg More instructions to follow, pease dont clutter me just yet. |
The fun part.
Now that you have everything mounted you can start to fill in the gaps. From your stepper motor you must route 2.5 vacuum lines. 2 point 5??? Yes.
From the two nipples that were previously used to draw a reading for precontrol and wastegate you can no simplify them to one line. Route that 6mm hose from one(or both nipples into a T) to the "NO" nipple on your stepper motor. From the "COM" side route one hose down close to your actuators and use a T adapter to split the one 6mm hose into 2 hoses. Route these two hoses into the wastegate and precontrol. The appropriate nipples are on the passenger side of the two actuators. On the other side of the actuators they are routed back into the vacuum system. You may want to cap off this side of the actuators(as per damians thread on boost control). If you do so be sure to cap off the hard lines they were toured to as well. Your stepper motor should now be fully plumbed into your system. https://img122.imageshack.us/img122/...ings0059ne.jpg In the picture above you can see the twi nipples you will use to draw a reading and route to the "NO" side of the motor. You can barely see the two actuators in the bottom of the picture and their line routed from the "COM" side fo the stepper motor. more to come. |
The controller unit requires its own vacuum/boost reading. Pull a vacuum line off of an accessory nipple on the Upper Intake Manifold and route this into the cockpit however you choose. I chose the steering grommet. You can see how I did this in the first picture in the thread. A filter is provided and place this filted in the vacuum line as close to the unit as possible.
The stepper motor has a short wire attatched to it with a connector. Connect the secondary wires to this connectore and route them into the cockpit and attatch them to the control unit. It only fits in one reciever at the back. Again you can kindof see this in the first picture. All that is left is the flying harness that came with the unit. I have not wired this in yet, I plan on drawing power(red) from my boost gauge and grounding(black) it over by the driver's left foot. Dont ground this with the ashtray which is a stupid wiring solution for anythins. Its semi suitable for gauges but the dimmer switch will play with the amperage which is not something you want in this application. Thats it for the writeup. We mounted the controller, mounted the stepper motor, plumbed the stepper motor, plumbed the controller unit, and wired everything. Remember to secure all of your plumbing with zip ties as well as possible so that it doesnt hang and you cant step on it or kick it and destroy everything. Good luck with your boost controllers. Remember to keep them set below your fuel allowance(14psi on a stocker) and remember to compensate for boost creep. |
Here are two very helpful links

Damian's thread is amazing and the attatchment with versions is important to understand what "version 1" etc. means on this crazy forum. |
i dont understand why you have the one nipple blocked off on your third picture, that doesnt correspond to version one or damians method?
|
Yes, You could take both those nipples and 'T' them into the stepper motor but it seemed pointless to me. They both see the same pressure. The only reason I can think that would be useful is a quicker response in the system due to using two nipple fittings, but Im skeptical. I may eventually T them off after I see how much room I have with my stock intake.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!! You just made my day. A simple and effective write up. The next guy searching for a how to will get a clear understanding of what to do! The next write up will be for version 2.
I guess I'll get started tomorrow. Again I thank you. |
My boost controller came with a very simple diagram of how to hook everything up. Do most of them not come with this?

It may be easier to hook up your boost controller if you are familiar with an FD or a turbo system. Both of which I am learning on the fly.
If somebody adds the version 2 info this will be the perfect boost controller how to..... Anybody? |
Here are pics of the version 2 setup, courtesy of 7 bound.

Is "com" in or out compaired to the old Greddy? As well as NC would that be out?
|
NO is in, NC is out, COM is out
NC is for external wastegates, and COM is for internal wastegates(you and me) But let me go double check that |
so how's your boost with the version 2 setup vs. version 1?
|
Im new to this, what is the PCA? what does a pill do?
|
PCA= PRESSURE CONTOROL ACTUATOR
PILLS= restrictors placed in the lines...to aid in boost control as the stock system is a redundent system.. gurus feel free to step in as ive maxed out my knowledge dump at this point. i blieve these to be correct....the names and stock locations and opertions of said abbriviations are in the owens manual found in the stickies..also verious other info can be found here.....sorry for the ramble. |
That is correct on the pills they act basically as a manual boost controller.
|
That' a hell of a good idea for mounting the control unit!!!!!!
|
Barban,
How about your settings? My car is still at the body shop so I haven't been able to play with mine ( profec type s) |

See if you can hit 10psi with the low boost set to maximum(I couldn't). Switch to high boost. Give it one notch at a time(its more sentative). A couple clicks above zero on high boost set my boost to about 11psi(Im looking for more like 13psi). So, I gave the gain one click at a time(it took two notches) and now its up at 13psi steady. I have a restrictor plate though so beware of boost creep. Enjoy. |
Barban,
Looks like version 2 is working well for you. I fianally got to try my profec type s out. I went with version 1. I cant get anything better than 9-5-9, no matter what I do in the adjustment department. Looks like I will have to try version 2 . |
I'm in the same boat with Three Sevens. I can hit 9-7-11 no problem but can't get that primary to boost to 10 without overboosting on the secondary.
Going out now to try version 2. Ill get back w/ my results in a few hours. |
I used version two just last week, and can get 10 - 8 10 no problem on the low boost setting.
