Boost?

my fd has a mild street port, hks down pipe, apex-i afc, and restrictive exhaust. lol any ways i was woundering how much boost it could take without breaking somthing i know the turbos dont push alot of cfm so i need to make up for it with some more boost so what can i turn them up to without hurting the turbos or the motor? ive got the boost controler on the way

FD3SR1 May 11, 2004 01:08 PM

oh ya the motor only has about 5k on it and its auto :( im saving for a trany swap.

rynberg May 11, 2004 01:09 PM

You still have the stock ecu, so 10 psi is it.

Even with an aftermarket ecu, pushing your turbos above 10 psi with a close-to-stock car is asking a lot and you will melt them quickly.

FD3SR1 May 11, 2004 01:11 PM

what would i need to do then because ive herd of people running 16-18psi on stock turbos but they had other stuff done

Very few people run 16-18 psi on stock turbos, and those who have didn't do it all the time.

Please learn more about the car before you start doing modifications. Spend a couple of hundred hours reading through the forums and the links in the stickies and you'll be a lot more knowledgable.

EDIT: Oh, Jesus, just looked at your profile - 17 years old. Put a downpipe on, get boost and water temp gauges, and then leave the damn thing alone until you have been driving for a few years.

Sprockett May 11, 2004 01:24 PM

you need some sort of ecu upgrade...probably a Power FC. Then you can do almost anything. I'd also look for a good FMIC or SMIC if you plan to run more boost. I think to prevent boost creep you can port your wastegate, but that doesn't mean you can increase the boost pressure. Basically, you're trying to force too much air into the engine without compensating for fuel. You will need an ECU upgrade to control the fuel needed (more fuel with more air) to guard against running lean, detonation, and buying another new engine.

Also remember that this is not a car you can mess up on and expect it to be OK. It's constantly walking a fine line between working perfectly and blowing up...and that's when it's stock. Modifying it will magnify existing conditions. I would get a Cat-back exhaust, downpipe, NO MIDPIPE, NO BOOST CONTROLLER, intake, and maybe get some suspension upgrades...better brakes...do the stuff that doesn't effect your engine performance, and wait on that until you are 100% confident about what you are doing. Please trust me - I did it the other way and it cost me $10,000 in 6 months.

I have a afc controler (it controls air to fuel) cant i just comp with that and the controler im gitting has multi. settings for boost

No, you can't. READ and learn. Leave the car close to stock, it's got more power than you can handle as it is.....

PhoenixDownVII May 11, 2004 01:35 PM

If you are running stock fuel (Injectors and such) I wouldn't turn up the boost at all. To keep your air/fuel ratio correct, when you up the air, you up the....you got it...fuel.

Just leave it at 10psi until post-tranny swap

FD3SR1 May 11, 2004 02:10 PM

its got to much power for me to handle hu? i dont think so, you may think im young but ive been racing for awhile i just got into rotary powered cars and i admit im still learning but dont doubt my driving ability every car i have ever owned (4) exept the rx has been a manual and i have raced it i think i can handle around 200hp to the ground! besides a fixed up ss camaro beat me and that needs to change! the turbos push 10psi but the stock turbos are shit they push next to no cfm i mean your mom blows harder then my stock turbos( for the person beening and ass)

FD3SR1 May 11, 2004 02:13 PM

so any one who want to respond nicely please do so..... thanks! all i want is an answer a NICE one! thank you people who responded nicely insted of beeing an ass because im 17 and have a 3rd gen

DeaconFrost May 11, 2004 03:01 PM

brake boost. that will give you a better chance against the camaro...but I was only able to beat a 99 SS with intake and exhaust after I had intake, full exhaust, PowerFC, and a 5spd. how much did you lose by? Im guessing he walked away from you off the line and then was still slowly walking you after about 100MPH? did you go from a roll or a stop? to get better odds still, go from a 20 roll and brake boost about3-4 psi...you dont want anymore than that unless its hot out...or you will spin...although you might not since you are very close to stock. I was putting down 251 rwhp on a mustang dyno and only beat my friends SS by 2 cars @ 120 MPH.

Sprockett May 11, 2004 03:24 PM

You know what, then? Just do it. You obviously know everything about this, and we are all too inferior for you to even be wasting your time with. None of us have EVER been EXACTLY where you have been before and have made mistakes and are willing to try to help little punk-ass know-it-alls like you save some money and sanity by telling you EXACTLY what you HAVE to do to NOT blow your fucking engine up.

PhoenixDownVII May 11, 2004 04:24 PM

Sorry, but your responce didn't help much.

You've been racing for a while huh? Can you get your liscence at 15 where you live? because here its 16, and that means you've been driving for a year....

And as far as handling the power, nobody here says you can't handle the power, I think most just meant the Rx7 can't handle the power without proper mods.

The rx7 isn't a street-race car. At least, I wish it wasn't used that way. Street Racing is lame anyways. Who cares about the camaro, its an uninspiring pushrod ugly everyday sports car. Leave it at that.

Good luck in whatever you do, I'm sure when you up the boost we'll be reading rebuild questions.. :D

Exactly. I'm pretty sure he means street racing, but maybe I'll be proven wrong.

Wrong. I certainly DID mean he cannot handle the power. Most people that have been driving for 10+ years can't fully handle the power of even a lightly modded FD. Anyone who doesn't have respect for how hard this car can bite is someone who is going to get bitten one day....

Yep. Either that or he'll wreck it and post a thread about it, blaming everything except for driver error....

FD3SR1: Grow up. You're 17 and it's obvious you're not mature enough for a car like this. Your parents should get a clue. Keep the car stock and try not to kill yourself or someone else.

bee May 11, 2004 05:02 PM

Im sorry but I have to know. How did you pay for that car?

BTW: You should watch your mouth. I could give two shits about how you drive and what you do with your car, but if your asking for advice ill tell you this. Never post here again unless you plan on learning about the vehicle first. As of right now, you dont know your ass from your elbow. And trust me, it shows. You sound like some jackass kid from 2 fast 2 furious.

..........................

The less 7's on the road, the more mine is worth right? Sure buddy, crank that boost up. These cars are great for drifting too. Go try it on some mountain roads.

Well im glad half of you posting have dicks in your ass. and yes im paying for my car and yes you can race on the track without a licence and i admit i dont know it all thats why i posted and when i posted i didnt ask for smart ass comments like the one i have gotten i asked for an answer so i repied back to them as for the nice people out there sorry about all the nasty posts!!!!!!!!!!!! you guys feel free to replie any time! so any other comments or can we get back to being nice? and helping each other?

level7 May 11, 2004 11:27 PM

pay off your car first, then start modding. unless you have a daily driver which i doubt. how good are your mechanic skills btw?

properly running FD = money pit :p:

KaiFD3S May 11, 2004 11:35 PM

just remember, make sure to learn how to handle the car at its point right now and then worry about getting more power ot of it...unless you have a lot of experience in driving high power cars...we dont want to read another thread that another FD has now been turned into junk! I'm not dogging you in any way just dont want to see another FD wasted...The FD is very tempermental especially in corners or even in a straigt line with an unexperienced driver...Good luck and enjoy your car

Gee, just a little homophobic aren't we?

And no, I've never seen a track that you could "race" on without having a driver's license (other than karting). What kind of "racing" are you talking about?

It's obvious you aren't mature enough to realize the potential of a stock FD, making it faster will only increase the probability that you're going to wrap it around a telephone pole.

CapitanCombo May 12, 2004 08:01 AM

Oh my god,
17 years old and a third gen
here we can't even get license with that age
nor we can dirve fast cars until 21....
sometimes I wonder why laws out there permit these sort of things

DeaconFrost May 12, 2004 09:29 AM

you dont need a licence to race at a drag strip.

Running a car down a 1/4 mile does NOT teach you how to handle the car.....when I say "track", I mean a track, not a drag strip.

adidashatesnike May 12, 2004 09:57 AM

Hey, I kinda support the kid, but when I was 17 I was modding out my 88 gxl and saving for my BEAUTIFUL 93 Montego Blue dream that I now own at age 19 but as far as defending yourself with "So I race on the road", yea thats not a very strong one. I LOVE MY CAR.
