Book/Manual Recommendations?
 

I'm currently in the market for an RX7 and have been floating around different RX7 websites and have found RX7Club.com to be the most informative and, for the most part, a great community. I've read on quite a few posts that someone who knows absolutely nothing about rotary motors to obviously get a book/manual as a reference guide. Anyone have any recommnendations?

PS I do know something about the conveted rotary. The shiny triangles go spinny and make the car go zoom, zoom, zoom :lol: .... Oh from what I read, not only does it go zoom, it also goes BOOM :icon_no2:

Thx rx7Driver, that is definitely something I'll bookmark and read when I'm at the computer. Unfortunetly, I live in a house hold were my wife and kids take over the computer. Looking at the website through an iPhone, constantly zooming in-and-out takes a toll on the eyes. So I'm kind of looking for a hard copy of a book relating to the Rx-7/Rotary engine, preferably the third generation.

Best thing I ever did was to print out the pdf manual in that link. I HATE trying to scroll through a pdf on a laptop... Actually, I had a friend at a law firm print it out and bind it for me. :) No way I was going to pay for all of that ink and paper!!

Believe it or not, you can even BUY a PAPER copy of the shop manual! :) I much prefer a real copy over PDF printouts - it's a MUST if you're doing any serious work on the FD.

Back to the original poster, the only FD books that are really of merit are -

- the shop manual
- the '93 RX-7 Service Highlights book. Dealer item, basically explains how all the systems work.
- the Yamaguchi book. Out of print, but is on Ebay frequently. Gorgeous hardcover book with tons of pictures and talks about the development process and everything.
- The Brian Long RX-7 history book. Available from Amazon, a little pricey, but it's available new, hardcover, tons of great pics, and the history is dead-on and well researched.
- The RX-7 Sports Car Color History book by Matras. It's been around for ages, it's good, some wrong facts in there, but a solid history book.

There's a 1971 and a 1981 Yamaguchi book. LMK your filesharing site of choice and i'll see about uploading them. I also have Corky Bell's maximum boost, which is a decent manual for just about any boosted car.

I've been looking around for the Factory Workshop manual and found it here, http://www.mazdatrix.com/m-1.htm, its a bit expensive, roughly around $115. They also have books on wiring diagrams for 2nd and 3rd gens. As of this writing, there are none listed on EBay =/


Anyone ever purchase the Mazda Performance Handbook?

I've seen that before, but I am hesitant to buy a "loose leaf binder" for $115. I have a feeling it's exactly what I already have; a crappy pdf file printed out!

As odd as it sounds, I'll see if the company could send me a few pics of the manual's construction and a few pages of its content. I'll keep you posted.

We were talking about obtaining a hard copy of the FSM as Dale indicated it was available somewhere. I already have a printed copy of the FSM and other items in those links, but it's not very high quality.

Mazdatrix.com replied, assuring the manuals are purchased from Mazda USA. He said the problem with US Mazda dealers is they hardly have any factory workshop manuals in stock while Mazdatrix.com currently has them on the shelves =D

The quality on the 1st generations (dependent on the year) are of poor quality but 3rd gens are of good quality.

you can get them off ebay, they show up every once in a while. I got the three mazda manuals for the 94 there for around $30 each used.

You should be able to get the shop manuals from Ray at Malloy Mazda. I got my '93 Service Highlights book from him a while back.

I believe the "small" shop manuals are $80 or so from Ray. They have the wiring diagram, body electrical manual, everything. They are bound, good paper, etc. - VERY well worth it.

There are also larger copies of the shop manuals that are in 3-ring binders with 8.5x11 paper - these are the "dealer copies". They're designed to be on a bench with all the shop manuals, and the looseleaf design allowed Mazda to send out updated pages if they had errors or needed to clarify something. I have the '95 dealer version, but it's pretty hard to use while working on the car. The small one is VERY easy to tote around and use.

If you're serious about working on an FD, you REALLY should own a proper shop manual. A bunch of PDF printouts floating around isn't the way to do it.
