BOMZ intake hardpipes - Review with pics

After hearing mixed reviews about the hardpipes I decided to see for myself how good they really were. I paid $70 shipped for them which is a very fair price considering how much the M2 pipes cost....

I opened the box to find two very polished pipes, four couplers, and 8 correctly sized clamps. Everything seemed to be how it should be so i pulled off the accordian hoses and started putting the hardpipes on. Like everyone has said the fitament with the front turbo is a little bit off, but having an aftermarket, open air intake, really makes things fit a bit better. The fitament to the rear turbo was great and basically flawless. After installing them I went for a drive. The car felt smoother under acceleration and the pipes change the sound and pitch of the turbos spooling. The turbos seem louder and crisper sounding. All in all it was a great purchase especially since they just came down in price again. (I paid $70 shipped and i think you can get them for like $45 shipped now). I got them from "bestcarpart". Here are the pics after installation.

This is a pic of the main problem area: the front turbo.

Please excuse the red wire looms around the ABS lines. (long story)

You might want to order some new silicon hose couplings...

I had the same kit, and the couplings kept splitting because of the heat.

I ended up buying some really nice nylon reinforced silicone couplings. Here - http://www.extrememotorsports.com/g1cat/hoses.htm

Pics before new couplings:

I like them, but they scratch easily. Easy to clean and repolish though.

Like I said, watch out that your couplings don't split, you might want to buy new (better) ones.

Thats for the advice fujikuro, i'll keep an eye on the couplers.

Where did you get the heat shield that is shown in the picture?

Looks like he made it by hand and used rivets to attach two pieces in the middle

EDIT: Here is the shield template provided by damian.

HobbeZ 01-10-04 06:57 PM

i'm pretty sure that's the one damian posted up a while back he had the entire thing drawn out for everyone to copy

jwaingold,

Fabrication of one's own parts, what a concept! :D

Quickfini 01-10-04 07:07 PM

Yeah I got the same hardpipes, but from Huy Tran on here and they turned out sweet. I'm not sure if it fit exactly with the stock intake, but with my k/n set up, it was perfect. I also made Damian's heat-shield. Turned out very well.

here's a pic.

too bad they dont go ontu the stock airbox

alberto_mg 01-11-04 11:11 AM

no they don't :( expensive mistake for me considering i bought them when they cost $100.

the rxstore.net pipes fit the stock air box and probably other cold air boxes as well.

SWAT81 01-11-04 03:00 PM

I have the pipes as well and have the same set up as dubcaps, only thing is the clamps that comes with it keeps losening on me every few weeks so I just bought some spring clamps that dont loosen as much.

I am thinking about getting these as well. But I am thinking about getting a new non FM intercooler.

Do any of you use them with an aftermarket intercooler?

Thanks,
Joseph

purerx7 12-04-05 09:20 PM

DMoneyRX-7 12-04-05 10:43 PM

TpCpLaYa 12-04-05 11:24 PM

the pipes are definately worth the price. Bling factor + efficiency(even if its really really tiny)

DMoneyRX-7 12-04-05 11:27 PM

ya through my searching their was alot of debating. batman and some other dude. halarious stuff!

jacobcartmill 12-04-05 11:44 PM

is the stock airbox really that restrictive? i'm worried about these intakes raising my boost into fuel cut territory when its really cold outside
