bolt snaped !! Grrrrrr....
 

I just spent 30 bones on a new torque wrench, so I decided to test it out by torquing some 10 mm bolts. So I set the wrench to 20 n.m the torque spec from the rx7 data sheet for 10mm botlts, so I twist it off and start wrenching it back on , i'm waiting for the click to tell me to stop twisting, I heard a click alright, the head of the bolt snaped right off.:mad:

so anyone know of a way to get the stud out off the hole??... vise grips won't work cause there's not enough stud exposed..

The same thing happened to me when i was torquing my rear main gear bolt. I tried it with a pair of pliers hoping to grab on to 1/8 of an inch sticking thread but no luck. My next source would be a EZ-OUT or thread chaser. Go to your local hardware store. They have them but make sure you pre-drill first before using the easy out...good luck!

Carefully drill into the centre with a drill about 1/3 the bolt size. Then use an EZ-Out or Sears Craftsman sells a kit with what looks like reverse screws which you turn into the hole and screw out the broken stud. Are you sure it was 20nM that sounds high for a 10mm bolt - which bolt was it?

Two studs on my downpipe broke too. What tools do I need to remove those?

I have a broken stud right now on the rear. I can't get the axle nut off though. I tried hitting it with an impact wrench and a 2 ft breaker bar with 3 ft pvc pipe on it and couldn't break it loose. Any ideas or would it be best to take it in to the shop?

No hope! Unless you can get the downpipe off and grip the broken stud, not enough room to get a drill in there.

Always use a lot of liquid wrench and if possible put it on ever 12 hours for a day or two. Less likely to break anything.

i used some wd-40, A 6foot fence pipe and a hardened 1/2 inch ratchet.

Did your rotor slip when you were doing that? I had someone on the brake and the rotor was slipping.

easy out works great just pre drill a hole and it will come out...(as long as you can get a drill in tight spots to do it)

sweet, I drenched it w/ liquid wrench, and bought an ez out bit, drilled a little hole and the stud came out with ease, thanks for the input guys, oh the bolt was just some miscellaneous bolt for one of my many ground wires, but the fact that it broke off bothered me :p:

If you can get at the bolt with a drill, left handed drill bits work good sometimes too. You can only really use those if you know that the bolt can move, if the bolt is tough to get out(ie; rust, seized,) than it gets tough/

when using ez outs DONT EVER drill thru the bolt.. That just causes it to expand! Not a good idea!!

I hate ez outs, the main problem, is that if the bolt is stuck, they are going to give you a lot less leverage than the full size shaft that twisted, I just drill and tap, you can usually get close to thread depth, and the coils will just crumble out.

If you break those mid pipe studs, you can always give your turbo studs a try, if you break one of those, then there is the exhaust manifold =0

Getting the part off of the car and into the drill press is very desirable.

BTW, do not ever use heat with an easy out, they break like aluminum when hot, and they absolutely suck to drill out of the middle of your broken bolt.
