BNRs Hit The 1/4 Mile (Kind Of)
Figured I'd put this in general as I know there are a lot of people who were interested in what the BNR's could do. Unfortunately things didn't go entirely to plan:
Idea had been to have a gentle sighting run on pump fuel while I waited for the race fuel to turn up. Unfortunately I got paired up against a Skyline that pulled away from me as I very gently launched and my natural competitive nature took over :o First was just wheel spin, shifted into seconds and took car lengths out of the Skyline then as I went from 2nd to 3rd bang and the sound of metal on metal appeared. Kept my foot down through 3rd with the car not pulling properly, then into 4th with it barely doing anything. Have lost the engine and I think the diff (it was clunking hideously on the return road and one chamber is completely gone). Despite this it ran a 12.6 @ 120.99 with a 2.5 60' :o I guestimate the terminal would have been 128-130mph had the car held together at 1.3bar, but it wasn't to be :( Don't know what caused the failure, didn't bother datalogging it as it was supposed to be a gently run, and the AFR's were fine when out mapping it 2 days previous. Never got a knock flicker on the dash, so just confused and depressed at the moment. |
That sucks man. Keep us posted as to what happened.

Wow, sorry to hear it :(. Hopefully the motor isnt torn up too badly.
I hope I don't have similar results when i finally hit the dragstrip. Did you have a stock diff? I have a cryoed TII diff, diff brace, rp diff bushings and re toe links/trailing arms. Hoping to not have rear end problems. |
sorry to hear about that
they don't call it the F****** D isaster for nothin ;) |
Sorry to hear....:(
Were you running 1.3 bar on pump gas? Maybe you should post your map or describe your normal AFRs/timing. |
1.3 bar~17.5 Psi. Definitely the upper limits of pump gas. With water injection and good spot-on tuning I plan on running that on 94 octane. If I can get 130 mph traps I will be one happy camper :D

you are a brave man, Rich
I would be running 100 octane min at 17.5 psi....why risk it? |

Sorry to hear about that problem.. I have been tossing the idea of water injecton around for a while since I chatted w/ Rich. Also would make sense if you were running a wideband at all times (get some life out of the sensor w/ just unleaded + W/I). I got an innovative wideband kit. Have not installed yet. Just been running around on 100 oct. av gas for some insurance. I was tuned on 50/50 93 and 100. No problems yet. 8K on the time bomb.

Isnt 1.3 bar closer to 19lbs? Your car must pull like a mother to have that trap speed and such a bad launch

FWIW I run my Techedge in the stock O2 sensor location, and it is on the whole time, just have to plug the laptop in to datalogit it. Has been either there or in the bottom of the downpipe for the last 2 years and I've been running WI all that time. Got just over 5k from this engine, which is a tad upsetting. |
Do you have a 3-bar MAP sensor?
You were running 19 psi on the equivalent of 93-94 octane here. That's pretty aggressive, if you ask me. I would have been using 100+ octane for sure at those boost levels, even with water injection. |
If you are running a stock map sensor, I'm not surprised you popped your motor. Even with water injection, that is a tad too much boost to be running on pump fuel.

rich where did you find c16?

Have been running the GM 3bar MAP sensor for years, other than the shell the only original part on the car is the dashboard :D
