Blown engine or not?
 

Well I think the engine took a shit on me yesterday, what do you think. I was driving at 40mph and all of a sudden I could hear a slight muffling sound and a total power loss. I managed to pull the car in a parking lot before it shut off so I looked under the hood and I could find nothing wrong or out of the ordinary. So I tried to start my car while my friend was trying to see if he could see anything out of the ordinary, but all you would hear when trying to start was the starter and you could smell fuel. Its as if there is no rotation or compression for that matter. There was no smoke coming from the engine bay or the exhaust, no over temp, or weird vibration's of any type. All my IC piping, intake piping, fluids, belts, throttle cable, spark plug wires and spark plugs are good. I changed my fuel filter about one year ago, so I don't think its a lack of fuel. I am going to do a search on how to tell if the engine is getting compression, but if anyone has ever had this problem or has an idea on what it may be please let me know what you did to fix it.

You're saying that the engine won't even turn over?

Try checking the elbow, there is a hose that should be attached to it. Also, a blown engine usually sounds extremely lumpy. The RPM will constantly go from 100 RPM to 300 RPM. A compression test will definitely tell you if you need a rebuild. Also, check your alternator and belts.

Nope the the engine wont turn over from what i can tell. And all the hoses are attached. So if my alternater went out could that be my problem but when my car started to dye my volts wher sitting at the 13.3-13.5volts.

If I blew my engine would I beadle to start it. And as for the rpm's fluctuating they did not fluctuate they just started to drop slowly till the engine just died

So you're saying that the engine is locked up, or is it that the starter won't work? Does the starter just click when you hit the key? Have you tried to turn the engine by hand? I would do that. See if you can turn the engine over by hand. If you can, then the motor is not locked up, and you may just have a dead battery, blown fuse, or bad connection.

Starter is working and the battery is brand-new and all my fuses are good. I will try to turn the engine by hand when I get off of work.

If it won't move then put some ATF in it, let it sit, and come back the next day to see if you can work it loose by going back and forth with it.

I know you said you checked your fuses, but check one more time. The interior fuse block. The fuse block labeled Engine. That one got me and the ingnition went out even though it still smelled like fuel.

if i were you, i would do the atf trick to see if flooding is your problem first, then bring it in to check your compression if that doesnt help.

good luck. when i blew my engine, it still ran, but was extremely lumpy at idle. it is still running (not smooth at all, but it works) after almost 1000 miles of no-boost "granny-shifting double-clutching" driving. your problem sounds like it could very well just be flooded or possibly some type of electrical problem. have you checked your coil packs?

No I still haven't found the problem yet. I have compression, ignition, and fuel so I think it might be the ECU so I am going to take the ECU to Mazda and have them check it out. Is there a chance that it might be my crack angle sensor if so do any of you now how I might be able to test the sensors to see if they are in good working order. Well these are my two last options so I hope this fixes it because after this I am all out of ideas.

this same thing happened to me last night! driving home, and suddenly the engine died. Although my engine turns over, it just doesn't catch. Let me know if you fix it!

The hose on my map sensor is connected but is there any way that something else could be wrong with the map sensor like something electrical

hey when you turn the key in the ignittion to you hear the motor turning? If you do it might be your alternator.

I can hear the engine turning but the fact that it might be my alternator is strange because when the problem first happened I looked at my volts and they where sitting at around 13.5-13.8 volts.

do you hear the car firing up? If not The problem may be ignition related.

I checked to see if I had ignition and you can see the spark on the trailing and the leading spark plugs but after I installed the plugs and tried to crank You cant hear any firing all you hear is the starter and the whooshing sound of compression. Which reminds me, the whooshing sound is it loud or soft. Because if I did not have enough compression could that be why the engine would not start?

were the plugs wet or damp with gasoline? Were they blackened on the ends? Its sounds like the alternator, but im not sure. Jump start your car and see if it works. If it starts up with the jumper cables hooked up then dies when you unhook it its the alternator, make sure the other car is runnin.

The plugs are fine. I think when I get home from work I am going to put everything together and try to start the car while my roommate jiggles the wiring for the map sensor and the throttle position sensor. If that doesn't work I will try to jump-start the car.
