Blow off valve ! what has happened ??

Hi guys !

Hope someone can help me ! I was out driving my dad's FD, not pushing the very hard or something like that, but suddenly the BOV did not made any sound, so I thought maybe a hose had came off or gone loose, but I could not see any hoses had come off ! it was from the one moment to the other that it happened ? could it be a hose that I could not see from above, and if wich ? I have bought the BOV (a HKS SQV) used, so I have no instructions of how it is build or works. Could it be the blow off valve it self that has "broken" in some way ? maybe it has some membrans inside that can broke ? how can I now if it is the BOV it self ? I can not feel any difference in the way the motor behaves, the only thing is that the BOV doe's not make that carateristic sound and maybe it does not do the work as it should now ? could it be something totally different than the BOV it self ? I am totally lost here, I can not find out why it suddenly is not "working" any more, hope someone can help me.

If the car is not geting any boost, the bov won't make a sound. It's probably a busted coupler or some kind of Vacuum leak.

If the car boost properly (10-8-10 boost pattern) but no bov sound, then i don't know what it is.

He said the motor did not act any different than before, if he had a leak then it wouldnt idle normal.

Make sure all the hoses are tight. Do you have a boost gauge? If not you should get one, this would help us figure out what the problem is much faster.

If he had a leak that's involved with couplers or anything around IC, then it would idle normal, but he wouldn't boost anything past 2 psi.

Ok, but if he had a leak and was only getting 2 psi then the engine wouldnt perform the same as before.

Hi guys !

Thank's for your reply's and sugesstions to what could be wrong ! it is very strange, because today a tjekked all hoses (one was actually loose, but I do not think it has anything to do with the BOV) and I thightned the hoses wich I could thight ! started the car and as I wrote the car is ideling normal, sounds normal and everything seemed to be OK, allso the boostfigures yesterday was normal 12-10-14 PSI ! ok so I took the car for a testdrive today after I had inspected and thightned the hoses (even though no one really had to be thightned, all looked and felt just OK) but now suddenly the BOV has come "alive" again and now sounds and works as before ?? I must say I think this is very strange, how can that be ? could it be the BOV itself that had stocked someway ? what if it happens again ? all I can see is that everything seems perfectly normal, idle, boostfigures, oilpressure, watertemp etc.

Cleaning

I've had similar problems with 2 cars that had the same BOV. I had scoops or vents close to the BOV itself, and dirt and grime just eventually worked it way into the BOV. All you have to do is take it apart, oil it a little, and put it back together.

Granted this only happened once to each BOV and it took at least a year of constant driving for this to happen.

Just my $.02

12-10-14 is not normal, unless you have a different ecu or boost controller...in which case it would likely be 12-10-12 not 12-10-14....stock is 10-8-10

Snook 02-17-04 03:07 PM

HAHA 14 is real high buddy....many heavily modified cars dont run 14 on the street

turn that down to 10 you are going to damage the motor

DCrosby 02-17-04 03:11 PM

Heck if he sais that's what it boosted before, then that's normal.. and the HKS SSQ is supposed to be good till at least 20PSI.. that's why it's sequencial, casuse it has two valves, that open up depening on pressure...

Personally I'd be worried about my seals... but that's just me... :D

Hi guys !

OK, I understand that you are concerned about the high boost figures, but as we all know our car's are different and I have had no problem at all so far, I mean when I drive the car I am sometimes pushing very hard, accelerating hard taking the car to the rev limit and I do not experience any fuelcut, detonating, boostcreep or anything else that one can experience with too high boost. At first I had no upgraded ECU (drove on stock on thoose boost figures) I now has the PFC installed, but even when I had the stock ECU I did not experience any problems, but I knew this was too unsafe, so therefore I bought the PFC, and OK I can feel a difference in the way the motor runs, much more smooth and responding quicker etc. allso pulling a little harder when accelerating. About the SQV BOV I am now more of the mening that it maybe has to be taken off to rinse and lube it as one guy suggest, it make sense because as I wrote I bought the BOV used, and I have no idea for how long it has been used ect so it would maybe be a good idea to do (I should have done that BEFORE I installed it in the first place ! ) but my problem is, I got no instructions of the BOV, so I really do not know how to take it apart, what to look after and what to do ? do you know somewhere I can download instructions/informations about this HKS SQV BOV ? at last, if it suddenly happens again that the BOV does not function proberly (no sound etc) is it then dangerous to drive the car because the BOV maybe not is letting air out from the turboes or what ? hope you will answer my questions, thank's guys ! ;)
