Blank Odometer

Well ever since i got the car the odometer hasnt worked so today i ventured to try to fix it. I took the cluster out and took it apart and found one bad capacitor and replaced it. Then put it back together and it has the back light and everything show up except the milage it all reads 8(no reading) and searched and was reading about a grounds. Does anybody know the exact ground that could cause no odometer reading. Also when i turn the headlights on the back light goes out if that helps any. Thanks

Well i just ordered all new capacitors and going to replace them all to make sure already checked a few grounds.

the main ground for the odometer is on the engine harness

it bolts to the block under the rats nest, PITA to get to.

If your getting "eights" then I'm betting that particular ground is not your problem, as it will not show anything on the odometer if its not connected.

i'd stay on your current path since you are obviously getting power to the odometer

good luck

Not actually getting the number 8 on it but you can see that through the light because that is what they use to get every number. I have a blank reading for mileage and trip seems like the light isnt as bright as it used to tried switching it out but it didnt get any brighter and all the light that is there goes out as soon as you turn on the headlight even with the dimmer all the way up. I plan to send my injectors out soon to be cleaned so i will redo the ground when i do that(snowing right now on my fd). Thanks

I really need help with this, i replaced all of the capacitors in the odometer and scuffed up the contacts for the grounds. Still not reading the mileage has power. Really dont know why it is not reading and dont just want to get another odometer becasue i want to find out how many miles are on it and if this is getting power then i dont really think it is bad. Thanks

Somebody has to know:confused: This little problem is on my nerves just can't figure it out.

Its probably your cluster. I have several clusters and when I decided to test some of them, one didn't illuminate mileage. My guess would be to replace your cluster and see if the problem persists. Good luck!

I just got another odometer that works and have yet to try it to see if it was just a bad odometer or something worse. But if it works what is the thing inside of the dodmeter that actually remembers the mileage? And would i be able to switch it out with the other one to read the right mileage? Thanks

mine once in a blue mooon starts to go on and off randomly like every 5 seconds.

It's happened to me before.:wallbash:

There is a ground wire near the in the passenger kickpanel right under the ecu.
See if that's grounded correctly.
It should be black with a yellow stripe.
grounded by one of the 10mm bolts that hold the ecu in place.

hopefully yours is that simple too,
good luck,

Well i put the other cluster in ans it works:squint: so i have no clue why the othe one doesnt and i am fine with it beening like 5,000 miles over just happy to have a working ododmeter:D

You might look for damage to the flexboard on the back of the cluster - especially where it interfaces with the PCB. If it is creased, it could have broken a copper trace.
