black smoke???

black smoke coming out of exuast and backfireing as well. anyone care to help me out here?

Emerald99 04-24-05 06:30 PM

You might already know this, but black smoke can be burning oil.

generally means you're running rich. any more details?

-i thought oil was more of a bluish color? i guess if there was a lot it could be black...

You're right, thanks for correcting me.

Ocelot 04-24-05 07:19 PM

Yeah it's blue = oil, white = coolant, black = too much gas

scratchjunkie 04-24-05 07:23 PM

perhaps its the map sensor. check to see if its hooked up.

hotrodrx7 04-24-05 07:28 PM

Have you changed anything recently?

jimmyp281 04-24-05 07:36 PM

just dropped in a new motor and i just found out the map sensor is in bad condition. you guys think it might be the map sensor?

jimmyp281 04-24-05 07:38 PM

i just dropped in a new motor. and i just checked the map sensor, seems to be pretty beat up. and airborne what do you mean running to rich and how do i fix it.

jimmyp281 04-24-05 07:41 PM

backfires too when i rev high

mgoddard1 04-24-05 07:46 PM

Did you do anything with your fuel injectors when you had the motor out?

jimmyp281 04-24-05 07:50 PM

nope. didnt mess with the injectors at all.

mgoddard1 04-24-05 08:49 PM

How about the TPS? Is it plugged in? A misaligned or unplugged TPS or disconnected MAP sensor are the 2 most common things that would cause your problem. Since you put a new motor in maybe you forgot to plug in the coolant temperature sensor or the air temp sensor under the UIM? If you have a PFC with a commander you can quickly tell if the TPS or if the air or coolant sensor aren't plugged in.

does it smoke black when its warmed up?

my car does that when its cold and backfires a tad. Running a little rich is good for the car.
Atleast its not lean, or you'll be in big trouble
