Binding noise in rear! Help
Hope someone can help. One night i was at the track and i launched with TERRIBLE wheel hop. All of a sudden during the wheel hop it sounded like something snapped. I stopped and very slowly drove down the track. I didn't hear any major noises while driving straight. As i turned off, i heard another noise like something was banging. I towed it home and found there to be a crack in the PPF. I replaced that today thinking that was the problem. It didn't solve it. When i reversed outta the garage, and started to go up a hill, i heard what sounded like something was binding, then releasing. Same thing happened at a slow accel in 1st. I picked up the back and listened to the diff with a stethoscope while my friend spun a wheel, nothing sounds bad inside it. Any ideas?

Could the excessive wheel hop have completly torn apart the rear end bushings and make the driveshaft hit the PPF when under a load?

Just out of curiosity how did you check your PPF? I'm getting wheel hops and thuds in the rear and I've narrowed it down to the diff mounts and the PPF.
Did you actually take it off then saw a crack? |
Yea, i took it off and saw a 3" crack through both pieces of metal

any ideas?

Bump.

Probably chipped a spider gear in the diff. Where are you located.

Drain the fluid and see if there is significant metal on the drain plug magnet.

your third member is bad. weak link in an fd. replace it with a limited slip instead of the helical stock type. you will be much happier.

Located in MA. I am going to pull the diff cover on sunday and see if anything looks chipped. I have Royal Purple that i have been meaning to throw in there as it is.
