Big Tranny Problem With My FD

Today it was driving my 93 fd and i went to shift it into 5th gear and the syncro went out but here is the strange thing i really don't understand is i can't shift into reverse now too i pull on it with everything i can and it won't go in. Should i get it rebuilt, or just get a new one, also wondering where i could get that done i live in mansfield ohio so i'm close to rx7store.net in columbus they are a option but they have a lot of cars to work on. Just looking for some advice

Thanks

Scott

pm negative. he is getting his tranny rebuilt and its the exact symptoms of yours. i think he's paying $700 to get that job done.

That happened to mine, too. The synchro will first crack and the car will grind into 5th gear. Later, the synchro ring may crack again and a piece of it gets free. I think it is the "piece of synchro gets free" issue that makes it hard to shift into reverse. On my car, I just jammed it into gear and kept driving, but I guess I was lucky that the loose piece of synchro ring didn't get caught up in the gears. If you really need to get the car into reverse, you may be able to jam it into gear (pull very hard on the shifter as you try to work it into gear). Either way, you should get the 5th gear synchro replaced ASAP. But it is unlikely that you need anything beyond the 5th gear synchro. The parts are about $100 and you only need to open the rear housing on the transmission (as opposed to the main gearbox). $700 seems a little high to me, and I would guess $500 including parts is more typical. I am sure there are some places that will do it for even less than that.

thanx, that's actually more of my problem. I can actually put it in 5th with little work but reverse hell no. I'm not going to force it either I'm just going to pull the tranny off and get it fix.
