The best way to get the air out of my cooling system??????
 

Well my car has been down for about 1.5 years and its almost running again! Anyways i have heard that its a pia to bleed the cooling system on an FD, so i was wondering the best way to go about it.

You can take your FD on short drives, take it home and add coolant, or you can get a burper.

Throttle body coolant hose.

Disconnect the coolant line ontop of the tb by the fire wall.
Fill up the coolant till it starts leaking out of the line and reconnect the line.
Top off the coolant till the ast is full then put the PRESSURE cap on.
Top off the coolant at the DEAD cap
Pressureize the cooling system with a coolant pressure tester. This will tell you if you have a leak and it will slowly pushes the air to the top and will also cause the coolant level to slowly drop.
Top off and repressurized.
Repeat this a few times, the coolant will drop less and less with each time.
Turn hearter on full hot and on low speed with the parking lights on. The parking lights will cause the fans to come on earlier.
Start car and disengage fast idle
Coolant should drop a little and you should see a few air bubbles, top off coolant and put the dead cap on the car when the coolant starts to over flow.
Assuming that your heater works fine, after a few minutes the hearter should blow warm air. If the hearter stays cold this means you are very low on coolant or you have a big air pocket. If this happens turn off the car and let the car cool down. Top off the coolant and start the car and follow the directions above.
Monitior the temp gauge, and run the car till the fans come on.
Turn off the car and let it cool down. Top off coolant and check the level at the resviour.
You can continue to receck the coolant level each morning when the car is completely cold for next few days.

If you dont have a pressure tester you can skip that part but it will take longer to top off the coolant.

If you are putting in a rebuilt engine, you will have to have two people doing this since you are suppose to keep the revs up. Bleeding the cooling system on a fd is really not that bad.

The question is.. Is the cooling system pulling the coolant back from the overflow? Check the level in the overflow after the car has cooled completely (overnight) If it's not, you more than likely have a leak in the recovey line or the cooling system.

Just by one of these and be done with it.

do those bleeder things really work that well? it looks like a big funnel and a stick with some fittings.

yes they do work. even using the throttle body hose you still might have air in the system and it'll take you a few tries to get it all out.

just get that funnel jammie. it's cheap and definitely helps.

The funnel thing actually works. All it basically does is i catches the coolant that normally would flow out of the t stat housing. As the air is displaced it is replaced by water from the funnel. I have one of these things at work. Just make sure not to run the car for too long or you will have coolant shooting out of the car.

i actually changed my coolants about a couple days ago.. like 4 days ago.. and i poured the coolant throught the hose near the firewall. worked like a charm.. just took a little time..
took it for a 10 min drive went home and went to sleep in the morning opened the radiator and filled it back up to the top.. no more air.. then every once in a while i check the overflow tank and the radiator and its all good now

The funnel replaces the pressure cap, so your boiling point is much lower than usual while the funnel is installed. The coolant will boil after about 6-7 minutes of idling.
