I'll start by saying I'm no turbo expert...period. And can only provide my own data point. My own research and that of a good friend of mine(see here: GENE FELBER ARCHIVE: SINGLE TURBO SELECTION ) indicated the best *compromise* for my purpose and my goals was the GT35R. And that was: decent power, lower boost, reliability at the track, and ease of maintenance. For this the GT35R fit the bill. With my other mods: it makes 422rwhp at 15psi on 93 fuel with no WI. I can pound it at the track lap after lap (or at least i used to since I haven't been for a while), and it's plenty fast on the street...wait scratch that...scary fast... bordering on uncontrollable on the street unless it's pointed in a straight line. Anything approaching 500rwhp for street can, and even on the track, comes with significant downsides that IMO outweigh the BIG power numbers, unless you ar just into bragging rights. if I could do anything differently today it would only be to switch to a T4 divided manifold. Ok next question, i got my self a fuel pump, however i need a regulator and injectors.
Can any one suggest what i should use, aiming for 400 to 450bhp, do i need to upgrade fuel lines? |
If you don't plan on going over 450whp than you can do that with 850/1600 injectors. Frankly I'd stick with the EV14 (newer) based injectors. The FPR... a lot of people use the Aeromotive A1000 regulator.
Your stock hard lines should be fine at that power level.. |
thanks fendamonky, phoned my local tuner today and told him i had bought the bits and was telling him my plans, he seems really concerned on going more the 14 psi boost, he reckons I could be pushing my luck at 16 psi, his reason for this is not knowing the quality of rebuild i had done 6 years ago and what apex seals they used.
He's worried me into thinking i need to upgrade the apex seals... |
Well i found a phone number for the guy who done the rebuild back in the uk, he assures me that he would have used mazad OEM apex seals only.... however in the same breath he said he has run these at 20+psi ?? im so confused with conflicting information.

Tell us some more about your tuner... Is he a rotary specific guy? Or does he just do jap cars and will take on 7's if they show up?
I should think you'd be fine at 16-18psi if you're running water/meth injection. Also, did you talk to the guy who's info I sent you? He should be able to help as well. |
fendamonky - not yet i will send him a message this evening, the tuner is rotary specific, he is very well known in Perth, there aren't many around but he is considered one of the best.
I know it doesn't mean to much but they run an extremely fast rotary at the local drag strip hold quite a few record, they pull 7.85 seconds. so they must know there thing. I would be more then happy with 18psi, from the turblown info i should pull around 460rwhp, i am on the hunt for a water injection kit as well, ambient temps in perth get pretty high!! |
That could be why the tuner is hesitant to run more boost. I wouldn't want to push much more than 14-15psi without my injection running. Granted, I won't run my setup over 14psi currently because my ecu sucks (imo) for my application, even though EVERYTHING else about my setup is good for much higher.
Injection system wise, have a look at the aquamist setups, they're really nice. |
Ok, i got three of the four bolts off for the DP at the turbo end, one of them im struggling to get my ratchet set on, should i be removing the steering rack to free up space? or do i need a little bit more persistence.

Try a wrench and some penetrating oil :)
I never pulled a DP off a rhd car, but I know the lhd model comes off easily enough. |
all the bolts have been easy, the ratchet head clashes with the DP, if i use an extension piece it clashes with the body shell and steering rack, missing a 14mm spanner so maybe i should buy one and try from underneath the car?

I'm guessing that it's the bottom rear one you're having issues with? Yeah, have a go at it from the bottom with a spanner, I believe that's how I would always get mine off.

If you detach the lower uni from the steering rack, it will make things very much easier, undoing the pinch bolt on the slider facilitates....must mark the position on spline before removing. Be cautious on the "aussie guy" mentioned too, lots of angst and ruined engine components on money order/oz post delivered tunes. :lol:

Except for a few specialty items and consumables - which you probably could even save on if bought in bulk overseas - you'll mostly be buying offshore, so not much to recommend.
Margins required to stay in biz here along with <price at what the market will bear> philosophy ensures that. Hell, there are items made here that are cheaper to re-import. |

Ok i did start a build thread, but i'm not very good at the whole write up thing plus i'm really waiting on more parts to arrive, i will continue with my tread but once i get more done.
Question for now, PFC-datalogic, can someone confirm this is the correct place to purchase from FC Datalogit - Tuning Software for your APEXi Power FC i want to use this for logging and hooking up EGT and wideband. Success for high power is control and protection. Also will the PFC be sufficent for 20psi boost control or should i invest in a standalone, as you can see above the single turbo has twin external waste gates, will this be an issue for the PFC? |

guys i have my engine and everything open now as one of the apex seals failed, now in the process of gathering parts for rebuild and single turbo (to4z), turbo kit is ready, just wondering while i am at it is it a good idea to street port the motor or just leave it stock.. would it make big of a difference in terms of spool |
Thats a good question, is there any kind of porting that has had a positive result in reducing spool?..

I have a very normal setup that I have been raicing for 3 years now with a percision pt6076e and I had full boost on 3000rpm and power up to 8000rpm .for me it was very good for single turbo setup opening from 3000rpm a lot off rpmbup to 8 to use in track and the car was running with stock fuel setup 0.5bar making good power
